Paddy McGowan

John Patrick McGowan, known as Paddy McGowan, is a politician in Northern Ireland.

McGowan worked in the fire service [1] before joining the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP).

In 1981, McGowan stood for the SDLP in Omagh District "C", but was not elected. [2] In 1985, he was elected in Mid Tyrone, and in 1989, he moved to represent Omagh Town. [3]

McGowan was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996, representing West Tyrone. [4] He held his council seat in 1997, [5] but left the SDLP in 1998, complaining that it had become too nationalist.

McGowan stood as an "Independent Community Candidate" at the 1998 Northern Ireland Assembly election, but did not come close to taking a seat. [4] Despite this, he held his council seat as an independent in 2001 and 2005. [5] He is the Chairman of Omagh Safer Streets, [6] holds an MBE and is a Justice of the Peace.

The Irish Independence Party (IIP) was a nationalist political party in Northern Ireland, founded in October 1977 by Frank McManus and Fergus McAteer. The party was effectively a merger of Unity and the Nationalist Party, as the bulk of activists and councillors from the two movements joined IIP. However several independent councillors also joined the party. It was boosted in the late 1970s by the defection of a prominent Protestant Larne Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) councillor, John Turnley, later the party chairman, who was killed in 1980 in Carnlough, County Antrim, by an attack claimed by the Ulster Defence Association.

Gerry McHugh

Gerry McHugh is a republican politician in Northern Ireland. He represented Sinn Féin on Fermanagh District Council from 1993 to 2007 sat as an independent since then. He was elected to the Northern Ireland Forum in 1996, then to the Northern Ireland Assembly at the 1998 election as a Sinn Féin member for Fermanagh and South Tyrone. He lost his seat in 2003, but regained it in 2007. His fellow Sinn Féin member on both occasions was Michelle Gildernew. McHugh is a past pupil of St Comhghall's Secondary School in Lisnaskea.

2018 West Tyrone by-election

A by-election was held in the UK Parliament constituency of West Tyrone on 3 May 2018, following the resignation of Barry McElduff, who had been the Member of Parliament (MP) since 2017. McElduff had become embroiled in a social media controversy which had resulted in his suspension from Sinn Féin on 8 January. He announced his resignation on 15 January 2018.
