Peter Milliman is an American lacrosse coach and former professional player. In 2020, he was named the 23rd head coach in Johns Hopkins Blue Jays men's lacrosse history after serving as the Richard M. Moran Head Coach for the Cornell Big Red men's lacrosse for three seasons.

Early life and education

Milliman was born and raised by a single mother in Rochester, New York. [1] While attending Brighton High School, [2] Milliman began playing lacrosse in order to stay in shape for football season. [3] He was also inspired by Indigenous coach Sid Jamieson at a summer camp to continue playing the game. [1] Following high school, he attended Gettysburg College where he was a three-time Division III All-America and three-time All-Centennial Conference pick. [4] However, he struggled academically at Gettysburg and dropped out of the school with no more athletic eligibility and a few credits short of graduating. [1]

Career

Upon leaving Gettysburg, Milliman was drafted in the fifth-round, 26th overall, by the Rochester Rattlers in the 2003 Major League Lacrosse’s (MLL) Supplemental Draft. [5] [6] He went on to play professionally for four years with Rattlers, winning an MLL Championship in 2008. [4] While playing professional lacrosse, Milliman served as an assistant coach for the RIT Tigers and Siena College. [7] After winning an MLL Championship, Milliman was named men's assistant lacrosse coach at Pfeiffer University for the Pfeiffer Falcons. [8] While serving in this role, he was the recipient of two Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year awards. [7] He stayed in this role until 2012 [9] when he accepted an assistant defensive coordinator position at Princeton University. [7] As the assistant defensive coordinator, he helped the Tigers to a 9–6 record overall and a mark of 3–3 in the Ivy League during the 2013 season. [10]

After one year at Princeton, Milliman was named Princeton's offensive coordinator but chose to leave and accept an assistant coach position for the Cornell Big Red men's lacrosse team. [10] During the 2014 campaign, Milliman helped the team to a 9–0 record to begin the season and 11–5 overall. As a result, he was named the Mario St. George Boiardi '04 Associate Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse. [11] During the offseason, he chose to serve as a volunteer head coach for Team Russia at the 2014 World Lacrosse Championship after being recruited by Eugene Arkhipov. Prior to this, he had been unaware Russia had a lacrosse team and had never seen any of the players compete live. [12]

Milliman was made Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse in 2018 [13] and in his first season, the team qualified for the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in two years. The team went on to finish second in the conference and won the program's first Ivy League Tournament title since 2011. [4] The following year, he was named an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2019 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship [14] where he helped them to their fifth straight bronze medal. [15]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Milliman was named the 23rd head coach in Johns Hopkins Blue Jays men's lacrosse history. [16]

Personal life

Milliman is married to Megan Milliman (nee Fox), a lacrosse coach at Wells College. They have two daughters together. [4]

Major League Lacrosse (MLL) was a men's field lacrosse league in the United States. The league's inaugural season was in 2001, making MLL the oldest professional field lacrosse league in North America. Teams have played anywhere from ten to 16 games in a summertime regular season. This is followed by a four-team playoff for the championship trophy, the Steinfeld Trophy, named after founder Jake Steinfeld. The New York Lizards, originally the Long Island Lizards, were a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) team based in Hempstead, New York, located on Long Island. They are original members of the MLL. They lost the league's inaugural game on June 7, 2001 to the Baltimore Bayhawks, 16–13.

Dallas Rattlers American lacrosse franchise

The Dallas Rattlers were a professional men's field lacrosse team as a member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) based in Frisco, Texas starting in 2018. The franchise was a charter member of the MLL, operating as the Rochester Rattlers in Rochester, New York, from 2001 to 2008 and 2011 to 2017.

Cannons Lacrosse Club

The Cannons Lacrosse Club are a Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) professional men's field lacrosse team formerly based in Boston, Massachusetts. They played in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) from their inaugural 2001 season up until the league merged with PLL and won two Steinfeld Cup championship games. The team's home field was Veterans Memorial Stadium in nearby Quincy.

John Christopher Grant Jr. is a professional lacrosse player who has played in Major League Lacrosse, the National Lacrosse League, and the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Grant Jr. was named men's lacrosse Offensive Coordinator at Johns Hopkins in 2020.

Denver Outlaws

The Denver Outlaws were a Major League Lacrosse professional men's field lacrosse team based in Denver, Colorado, United States. They began playing in the MLL in 2006 as an expansion team.

Brodie Merrill is a Canadian professional lacrosse player. He currently plays in the National Lacrosse League for the San Diego Seals and Premier Lacrosse League for the Cannons.

Kevin Cassese is a professional lacrosse player with the Philadelphia Barrage, and head coach of the Lehigh University men's lacrosse team.

Maxwell Oren Seibald is a former professional lacrosse player for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse. He played midfield position. He graduated in 2009 from Cornell University. He is a former Tewaaraton Award winner, and two-time Team USA player. He played for Team Israel in 2018.

The 2008 Major League Lacrosse season was the eighth season of the league. The season began on May 17, 2008, and concluded with the championship game on August 24, 2008.

Tim Soudan is the current Head Coach for Chrome Lacrosse Club of the Premier Lacrosse League. He joined the team after the conclusion of their 2019 season, replacing legendary coach Dom Starsia. Soudan is a former National Lacrosse League (NLL) and Major League Lacrosse (MLL) player. Soudan was one year too early before the Olympic lacrosse team was formed, and was registered as a player but injured himself making him unable to play. Soudan also played in the NLL for the Boston Blazers (1991–1994) and the Rochester Knighthawks (1995–2005), and in the MLL for the Rochester Rattlers (2001–2003). Soudan coached the Rochester Rattlers from 2011 to 2017, earning coach of the year honors in 2014 and reaching the championship final in 2014 and 2015.

Ohio Machine

The Ohio Machine were a Major League Lacrosse (MLL) professional men's field lacrosse team based in Obetz, Ohio. They first played in the 2012 MLL season and continued through the 2018 season.

Rob Pannell is an American professional lacrosse player who plays for redwoods lacrosse club and formerly for Cornell University. He is the fourth leading scorer in men's Division I history, and holds the Cornell and Ivy League all-time scoring records. He was the Ivy League's first ever three-time Player of the Year award winner. He was voted the NCAA's Outstanding Player of the Year in Men's Lacrosse in both 2011 and 2013 when he was awarded the Lt. Raymond Enners Award by the USILA. He won the 2013 Tewaaraton Trophy, the most outstanding American college lacrosse player.

Florida Launch

The Florida Launch were a professional men's field lacrosse team based in Boca Raton, Florida. They joined Major League Lacrosse (MLL) as an expansion team for the 2014 season until 2019. The team played its home games at Florida Atlantic University Stadium. The team was owned by Jim Davis, founder and chairman of New Balance, an early investor in the MLL.

The 2016 Major League Lacrosse season was the 16th season of Major League Lacrosse. The season featured 9 teams after the addition of the Atlanta Blaze via expansion. It was the first season since 2008 that the league fielded more than eight teams. The defending champion New York Lizards are coming off their third Steinfeld Cup victory in franchise history and first since 2003 after defeating the Rochester Rattlers 15–12 August 8, 2015 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia. On August 20, the Denver Outlaws won their second Steinfeld Cup trophy in three years, coming back to defeat the Ohio Machine, 19–18.

The 2017 Major League Lacrosse season was the 17th season of Major League Lacrosse. Featuring the same nine teams as 2016, the season began on April 22. All four games played on opening weekend were won by the road team and decided by one goal, two in overtime. The season culminated in the championship game on August 19 in Frisco, Texas at The Ford Center at The Star. In a rematch of the 2016 championship game, the Ohio Machine defeated the Denver Outlaws 17–12, capturing their first Steinfeld Cup in franchise history.

The 2018 Major League Lacrosse season is the 18th season of Major League Lacrosse. The season began on Saturday, April 21 with three games. For the third straight year, the league consists of nine teams playing 14 games each. However, the league announced on November 16, 2017 that the Rochester Rattlers, one of the league's four remaining charter franchises, would relocate to Frisco, Texas and become the Dallas Rattlers. The reigning champions for the first time are the Ohio Machine, who would take a hard fall and finish 3-11 in 2018. The season culminated on Saturday, August 18 with the Denver Outlaws hoisting their third Steinfeld Trophy in Charleston, South Carolina at MUSC Health Stadium after defeating the Rattlers, 16-12.

The 2020 Major League Lacrosse season was the 20th season of Major League Lacrosse. Each of the six teams were slated to play a ten-game regular season starting on May 30, until the COVID-19 pandemic suspended the season. On July 2, the league announced teams would play a five-game regular season over the course of a quarantined week in Annapolis, Maryland at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the home of the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The regular season was scheduled to begin play on Saturday, July 18 with a four-team postseason the next weekend on July 25–26.

The 2021 Premier Lacrosse League season will be the third season for the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL). 2021 will represent a return to the tour-based format that the league followed in 2019 after playing a bubble tournament in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns. 2021 also represents a return to one unified professional Field Lacrosse format after Major League Lacrosse and the Premier Lacrosse League announced they were merging on December 16, 2020. This monumental merger sees the Cannons Lacrosse Club moving from the MLL to the PLL as an 8th team set by expansion draft. Like last season, this year will begin with the Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club competing as defending league champions.
