Photokina (rendered in the promoters' branding as "photokina") is a trade fair held in Europe for the photographic and imaging industries. It is the world's largest such trade fair.^{[ citation needed ]} The first Photokina was held in Cologne, Germany, in 1950, and since 1966 it has been held biennially in September at the Koelnmesse Trade Fair and Exhibition Centre in Deutz. The final Photokina under the then-current biennial cycle took place in 2018. Initially, the promoters planned to start a new annual cycle in 2019, with future shows to be held in May, but they later decided not to begin the new annual cycle until 2020.^[1]^[2] The worldwide outbreak of the Coronavirus disease 2019 and its effect on the imaging industry made Koelnmesse decide to cancel both Photokina 2020 and Photokina 2021.^[3] Many photographic and imaging companies introduce and showcase state of the art imaging products at Photokina.

Similar trade shows

The show has two main competitors, both of which are annual shows held in different parts of the world. The CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, originally the Japan Camera Show, has been held since the early 1960s. In the U.S., the main photography show is PMA@CES, which since 2012 has coincided with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

History

The first Photokina was held in 1950 at the initiative of Bruno Uhl [ de ]. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent a greeting telegram marking the opening of Photokina in 1956.^[4]

The 2008 show featured 1,579 exhibitors from 46 countries and had over 169,000 visitors from 161 countries.^[5]
The 2010 Photokina took place from 21 to 26 September. It featured 1,251 suppliers from 45 countries and had over 180,000 visitors from 160 countries.^[6]
The number of visitors still increased to 185,000 from 166 countries for Photokina 2012, which took place from 18 to 23 September 2012 and hosted 1,158 suppliers from 41 countries.^[7] The 2014 attendance remained roughly constant, at an estimated 185,000.^[8] The 2016 Photokina had about 191,000 visitors.^[9]
Photokina 2018 was held in Cologne, Germany from 26 to 29 September 2018. The dates were originally announced as 25–30 September, but the format was shortened as a part of the change to an annual event.^[2]
Photokina 2020, the first in the new annual cycle of events, was planned held once again in Cologne, 27–30 May 2020,^[1] but was cancelled because of the outbreak of the Coronavirus disease 2019 ^[3] as well as Photokina 2021.^[3]
On November 27, 2020, Koelnmesse announced ^[10] that Photokina is suspended until further notice.

It is open to the public and attracts about 60,000 visitors.

The Bloomsburg Fair has been held in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, since 1855 and continues to this day.

The Milan Furniture Fair is a furniture fair held annually in Milan. It is the largest trade fair of its kind in the world. The exhibition showcases the latest in furniture and design from countries around the world. It is considered a leading venue for the display of new products by designers of furniture, lighting and other home furnishings. The show, also known as "Salone", "Milano Salone" and "Milan Design Week", is held every year, usually in April, in the FieraMilano complex in the Milan metropolitan area town of Rho. Besides the Salone, in April every odd year Euroluce exhibition takes place and every even year EuroCucina and the International Bathroom Exhibition are held along the Milan Furniture Fair.

Art Basel is a for-profit, privately owned and managed, international art fair staged annually in Basel, Switzerland; Miami Beach; Hong Kong; and from 2022, Paris. The event is used by many video game developers to exhibit upcoming games and game-related hardware.

The imm Cologne is an international, publicly open furniture trade show held at Koelnmesse exhibition centre in Cologne, Germany, every year in January.

Eu'Vend is organised every two years by Cologne Trade Fair (Koelnmesse) at the fairground in Cologne - Germany. The conceptual sponsor of the fair is the German Vending Association (bdv), international partner is the European Vending Association, Brussels. The show is open for trade visitors only. Last Eu'Vend took place from 19.-21. September 2013. The next show will be from 24.-26. September 2015 again. Since 2011 Eu'Vend takes place in conjunction with coffeena. In 2013 the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe was the official education partner of coffeena for the first time.

The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) is an international, non-profit association advocating the interests of the photography and imaging magazine-publishing industry.

The DMEXCO is an annual trade fair for digital marketing and advertising. The largest congress trade fair for the digital industry in Europe has been held in Cologne, Germany since 2009. From 2000 to 2008, DMEXCO's predecessor was the online-marketing-duesseldorf (OMD) trade fair.

Hyundai Fomex (Korean: 현대포멕스) is a photo and broadcasting equipment company in Korea. It was established in May 1992 as Hyundai Trading Company and converted into a corporation in 1996 with the name of Hyundai Fomex. Fomex instituted a Digital Business Unit at Hongik University in 2002. In 2010, Fomex established a research and development center for broadcasting equipment industry advancement, and expanded exporting to North America, Europe, South America and other parts of Asia by participating in international fairs. Fomex won the VIP Asia Awards for best products in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, Fomex was designated as a Hi-Seoul brand company in Seoul. It was selected as a Small Giant Company of Korea in 2018.

The Allgemeine Nahrungs- und Genussmittel-Ausstellung (Anuga) is described by promoters as the world's largest and most important food and beverage fair.

Brighton Photo Biennial (BPB), now known as Photoworks Festival, is a month-long festival of photography in Brighton, England, produced by Photoworks. The festival began in 2003 and is often held in October. It plays host to curated exhibitions across the city of Brighton and Hove in gallery and public spaces. Previous editions have been curated by Jeremy Millar (2003), Gilane Tawadros (2006), Julian Stallabrass (2008), Martin Parr (2010) and Photoworks (2012). Brighton Photo Biennial announced its merger with Photoworks in 2006 and in 2020 its name was changed to Photoworks Festival.
