Richard Wyn Jones FAcSS FLSW (born 26 May 1966) is a Welsh academic at Cardiff University, where he is Director of Cardiff University's Wales Governance Centre and Dean of Public Affairs. Jones was a former Professor of Welsh Politics at Cardiff as well as the founding Director of the Institute of Welsh Politics and Critical Security Studies at Aberystwyth University. [2] [3]

Since 1997, he has led election surveys helping to detail the attitudes of electors in Wales in the immediate aftermath of Westminster and National Assembly elections. Jones joined the staff of Cardiff University in February 2009 as Director of the Wales Governance Centre. [4] He has written extensively on contemporary Welsh politics, devolved politics in the UK, and nationalism. He is often featured on BBC appearing on both Welsh and English-language broadcasts. [2]

In 2011, he was elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. [5]

Jones' latest contribution was in August 2021 where he was part of a panel discussing Drakeford's secret for Welsh Labour success on the Guardian Politics Weekly podcast. The panel consisted of Jones, Chris Bryant, Labour MP for Rhondda, and Ruth Mosalski, political editor at Wales online. [6]

The Wales Governance Centre (WGC) is a research centre and think-tank based Cardiff, Wales, which specialises in research into the law, politics, government and political economy of Wales, as well the wider territorial governance of the UK and Europe. It was established shortly after the 1997 Welsh devolution referendum, and was founded by Barry Jones in 1999. Its current director is Professor Richard Wyn Jones, and it is a part of Cardiff University.

A British confederation or a confederal UK has been proposed as a concept of constitutional reform of the United Kingdom, in which the countries of the United Kingdom; England, Scotland, Wales, as well as Northern Ireland become separate sovereign states that pool certain key resources within a confederal system with a central authority. Under the system, the central authority exists with the consensus of the constituent countries, which also maintain a right to seccession, if they wish.

There have been calls for further Welsh devolution, increasing the autonomy for Wales, since the Welsh legislature of the Senedd was founded following the 1997 Welsh devolution referendum.

The Senedd Cymru Bill was introduced on 18 September 2023 to take forward proposals to expand and reform the Senedd in Wales. Proposals included created sixteen larger constituencies, each electing six members of the Senedd (MSs) by proportional representation. It was hoped to approve the bill in time to take affect from the 2026 Senedd election.
