Riverdale Avenue Books, located in Riverdale, Bronx, New York, is a publisher of e-books, print books on demand and audiobooks founded in 2012 [1] by Lori Perkins. Riverdale is a member of the American Association of Publishers [2] and publishes between 50 and 75 books a year.

In 2014, Riverdale Avenue Books was named "Bisexual Publisher of the Year" by the Bi Writers Association. [3]

In addition to hitting Amazon's bestsellers lists, Riverdale's books and authors have won numerous awards. In 2017 Outside the XY: Queer Black and Brown Masculinity, edited by Morgan Mann Willis won an IPPY Gold Medal in the Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans Non-Fiction category and Queering Sexual Violence: Radical Voices from Within the Anti-Violence Movement, by Jennifer Patterson won an IPPY Silver Medal in the same category. [4] In addition, Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera won an IPPY Silver Medal in the Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans Fiction category. [4] In 2016, Menage a Musketeer: A Novel of Swords and Debauchery [5] by USA Today's Best Selling Author Lissa Trevor won the IPPY Gold Medal Award for Erotica [6] and Finding Maculinity — Female to Male Transition in Adulthood [7] by Alexander Walker and Emmett J. P. Lundberg won the IPPY Silver Medal for Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans Non-Fiction. [8] In 2017 Juliet Takes a Breath was selected by the Amelia Bloomer Project Committee of the American Library Association (ALA) for the 2017 Amelia Bloomer List, [9] which features the books with significant feminist content published in the previous 18 months that appeal to young readers. The Amelia Bloomer Project is part of the ALA, Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) Feminist Task Force. Outside the XY: Black and Brown Queer Masculinity by Morgan Mann Willis was nominated as a Lambda Literary Award Finalist in the Transgender Nonfiction category. [10]

At the onset of the Me Too movement, Riverdale published an anthology of 26 essays edited by Lori Perkins titled #MeToo: Essays About How and Why This Happened, What It Means and How to Make Sure It Never Happens Again. [11] [12] The digital version of the book rose to number 1 in Amazon's Kindle Store Nonfiction / Politics & Social Sciences / Women's Studies / Feminist Theory category and number 5 in Biographies & Memoirs / Leaders & Notable People / Political in the Kindle Top 100 Free Categories.

Local Events

Riverdale is the only publisher in New York City with a reading series open to authors of erotica and erotic romance. The Downtown Series is held at People Lounge in New York City on the first Friday of every month, and the Uptown Series is held at An Beal Bocht in Riverdale, Bronx, on the second Monday of every month.

Cleis Press is an American independent publisher of books in the areas of sexuality, erotica, feminism, gay and lesbian studies, gender studies, fiction, and human rights. The press was founded in 1980 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It later moved to San Francisco and was based out of Berkeley until its purchase by Start Media in 2014. It was founded by Frédérique Delacoste, Felice Newman and Mary Winfrey Trautmann who collectively financed wrote and published the press's first book Fight Back: Feminist Resistance to Male Violence in 1981. Radclyffe is an American author of lesbian romance, paranormal romance, erotica, and mystery. She has authored multiple short stories, written fan fiction, and edited numerous anthologies. Radclyffe is a member of the Saints and Sinners Literary Hall of Fame and has won numerous literary awards, including the RWA/GDRWA Booksellers' Best award, the RWA/Orange County Book Buyers Best award, the RWA/New England Bean Pot award, the RWA/VCRW Laurel Wreath award, the RWA/FTHRW Lories award, the RWA/HODRW Aspen Gold award, the RWA Prism award, the Golden Crown Literary Award, and the Lambda Literary Award. Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out, published by Riverdale Avenue Books, is an anthology edited by Loraine Hutchins and Lani Kaʻahumanu, and is one of the seminal books in the history of the modern bisexual rights movement. It holds a place that is in many ways comparable to that held by Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique in the feminist movement.

Juliet Takes a Breath is a young adult novel by Gabby Rivera. It was published on January 27, 2016, by Riverdale Avenue Books. The book's main character begins identifying as a lesbian. The book has won awards and has been met with attempts to have it removed from school libraries. NPR described the book as a coming-of-age story about a college student from the Bronx establishing her identity. The story takes place in 2003. A review in the Los Angeles Times Book Review notes it became an "instant classic" after its debut from a small publisher. It has been adapted into a graphic novel.

Paula Martinac is an American writer. She is most noted for her novel Out of Time, which won the Lambda Literary Award for Lesbian Fiction at the 3rd Lambda Literary Awards in 1991. The novel was also a finalist for the ALA Gay and Lesbian Book Award.

Tiffany Reisz is an American author. She is best known for the Original Sinners series of erotica and she has won the RITA Award and a Lambda Literary Award.
