The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University is the world's oldest archive of social science data and the largest specializing in data from public opinion surveys. Its collection includes over 27,000 datasets and more than 855,000 questions with responses in Roper iPoll, adding hundreds more each year. The archive contains responses from millions of individuals on a vast range of topics. [1] The current executive director of the center is Jonathon P. Schuldt, Associate Professor of Communication at Cornell University, with a governing board of directors chaired by Robert Y. Shapiro of Columbia University. [2]

Contents

The Roper Center focuses on surveys conducted by the news media and commercial polling firms; however, it also holds many academic surveys, including historical collections from Gallup, Pew Research Center, the National Opinion Research Center [3] and Princeton University's Office of Public Opinion Research. [4]

The Roper Center maintains cooperative relationships with other archives around the world. Its board of directors includes representatives from academic and commercial public opinion research. [5] The Roper Center moved from the University of Connecticut to Cornell University in 2015.

Ernest James Wilson III is an American scholar. Wilson was the Walter Annenberg Chair in Communication, and Dean of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, California from 2007 to 2017. He stepped down as dean in June 2017 and was succeeded by Willow Bay. Dr. Wilson is the founder of USC Annenberg's Center for Third Space Thinking, which is devoted to research, teaching and executive education on soft skills in the digital age. Through the center, Dr. Wilson's most recent research focuses on critical workforce competencies and talent and skills development in the 21st Century. Norman M. Bradburn is an American social scientist and the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at University of Chicago and former University Provost, and an Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, American Statistical Association, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Howard Schuman was an American sociologist and professor of sociology at the University of Michigan. He is known for his work on survey research, such as the design of polling questions.

James Allen Stimson is an American political scientist and the Raymond Dawson Distinguished Bicentennial Professor of Political Science Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After teaching at the University at Buffalo and Florida State University, among other institutions, he joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997, remaining there until his retirement in 2018. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he served as a fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences from 1994 to 1995 and as a Guggenheim Fellow from 2006 to 2007. He has received the Eulau and Kammerer Awards from the American Political Science Association, as well as the Chastain Award from the Southern Political Science Association. In 2016, he received the Warren J. Mitofsky Award for Excellence in Public Opinion Research from the Board of Directors of the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research.

Robert Y. Shapiro is an American political scientist specializing in public opinion polling and statistical methods. He is the Wallace S. Sayre professor of government at Columbia University. He is the chair of the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research at Cornell University, president of the Academy of Political Science, editor of the Political Science Quarterly, and a former acting director of the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy at Columbia.
