Said Iqbal (born 5 July 1968) is an Indonesian labour activist and politician. He is the first president of the Labour Party,founded in 2021,and has served as president of the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation since 2012.
Said Iqbal was born on 5 July 1968 in Jakarta. [1] His parents hailed from Aceh –his father from Pidie and his mother from Meulaboh. [2] After graduating from high school,he enrolled at the University of Indonesia's polytechnic to study mechanical engineering,later obtaining a bachelor's degree from Jayabaya University. He later returned to the University of Indonesia,obtaining a master's degree in economics. [3]
According to Said,he worked for 30 years at multinational companies,and upon his retirement received a severance pay of "billions" of rupiah. [4]
Said's labour activism began in 1992,when he worked at an electronics factory in Bekasi Regency. Following the fall of Suharto,he co-founded the All-Indonesia Federation of Metalworkers ,later becoming the federation's secretary general under Thamrin Mosii . [5] During this time,he helped formulate a number of labour laws. [6] In 2012,he was elected as president of the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation,and was reelected by acclamation in 2017. [7] He was elected for a third term in 2022. [8]
In 2012,Said led national strikes and protests against outsourcing. [9] He also led protests against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation. [10] Responding to a 2022 legislative discussion on revising the Omnibus Law,Said threatened a strike of three million labourers if the discussion was rushed. [11] He is a deputy member of the International Labour Organization's governing body for the 2021–2024 term. [12]
Said unsuccessfully ran as a candidate to represent the Riau Islands in the People's Representative Council in the 2009 Indonesian legislative election,under the Prosperous Justice Party. [13] On 5 October 2021,he was elected as President of the newly declared Labour Party. [14] Said stated that the Labour Party would not form a coalition with any political parties supporting the Omnibus Law, [15] but would instead form coalitions with 2024 presidential candidates on a "personal" basis with a campaign team separate to the candidate's official campaign team. He was married to Ika Liviana Gumay (d. 17 July 2019). The couple had one daughter. [17]

The Labour Party was a political party in Indonesia. It had its origins in the Indonesian Prosperous Laborers organization (SBSI),which in 1993 threw its support behind the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) as a vehicle for its political aspirations. When the PDI split in 1996,it allied itself with the breakaway faction led by Megawati Sukarnoputri,which led to it coming under pressure from the New Order government of President Suharto. On 30 July 1996,SBSI chairman Muchtar Pakpahan was detained on subversion charges. Following the fall of Suharto in 1998,the SBSI became disillusions with Megawati's now renamed Indonesian Democratic Party –Struggle and decided to establish its own party,the National Labour Party. After the failure in 1999 election,the party changed its name to Social Democrat Labour Party. The party stood in the 2004 Indonesian legislative election,but won only 0.6 percent of the vote and no legislative seats. The 2016 Aceh earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra with a Mw of 6.5 in Aceh province on 7 December 2016,at 05:03 WIB. The shock was reported to be at a depth of 13 km,categorized as a strong,shallow earthquake. The epicentre was located near the village of Reuleut in Pidie Jaya Regency,164 km (102 mi) southeast of the province's capital,Banda Aceh. 104 people died in the quake,with at least 1,000 people injured. It was the deadliest earthquake in Aceh since the 2005 Nias–Simeulue earthquake and the deadliest in Sumatra since the 2010 Mentawai earthquake and tsunami.
The Piala Presiden is an annual pre-season association football tournament held in Indonesia and organized by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI). Liga 1 and Liga 2 clubs are entitled to participate. The party was formed to channel the political aspirations of former president Suharto's youngest son,Hutomo Mandala Putra,better known as Tommy Suharto. Tommy,a convicted murderer by proxy,lost the general chairmanship of the party in July 2020 after the government recognized the leadership of a breakaway faction headed by former general Muchdi Purwopranjono. Berkarya came 11th out of 16 political parties that contested Indonesia's 2019 general election,receiving 2.09% of votes cast. The party supported Tommy's former brother-in-law Prabowo Subianto's unsuccessful bid for the presidency in 2019. After failing to win a 4% threshold necessary to gain seats in the national parliament,the party in 2020 split into rival factions:one led by Tommy and the government-recognized faction led by Muchdi.

The Indonesia omnibus law protests were a series of demonstrations and civil disorder against Indonesia's Omnibus Law on Job Creation which was passed on 5 October 2020 as well as President Joko Widodo. Demonstrations had begun on 13 January 2020 while the then-bill,claimed by the government as vital to boosting the country's manufacturing industry and foreign investment,was still being drafted. Protesters were concerned with the law's impact on the protection of the environment and working conditions.
The Job Creation Act,officially Act Number 11/2020 on Job Creation,is a bill that was passed on 5 October 2020 by Indonesia's People's Representative Council (DPR),with the aim of creating jobs and raising foreign and domestic investment by reducing regulatory requirements for business permits and land acquisition processes. Due to its length of 1,035 pages and its coverage of many non-employment sectors,it is also referred to in Indonesia as an omnibus bill. The final draft was changed to 812 pages due to pagination being changed to legal format. After being passed into law,there were various substantial text alterations and deletions,as well as procedural issues,which made its legal status eligible for being formally annulled.

The lawsuits were brought forth after PRIMA failed to qualify to participate in the 2024 Indonesian general election. One of the demands in PRIMA's court petitions was the postponement of the election,which was granted by the District Court.
