The Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a humane society in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. [1] [2] [3] The society operates a shelter at 6 1/2 Mile Penrissen Road in Kuching. In January 2011, the shelter was flooded, and most of the society's inventory of food was destroyed. [4]

Kuching International Airport is an international airport serving the entire southwestern region of Sarawak, Malaysia. It is located 11 km (6.8 mi) south of Kuching city centre. The airport also shares its runway with the RMAF Kuching Airbase, home to the No. 7 Squadron RMAF.

2006 Sarawak state election

The ninth Sarawak state election was held on Saturday, 20 May 2006 with nomination day on Tuesday, 9 May 2006. The election functioned to elect 71 representatives to the Sarawak State Assembly. The eighth state assembly was dissolved by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng by the advice of Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, on 24 April 2006.

History of Sarawak

History of Sarawak can be traced as far as 40,000 years ago paleolithic period where the earliest evidence of human settlements is found in the Niah caves. A series of Chinese ceramics dated from 8th to 13th century AD was uncovered at the archeological site of Santubong. The coastal regions of Sarawak came under the influence of the Bruneian Empire in the 16th century. In 1839, James Brooke, a British explorer, first arrived in Sarawak. Sarawak was later governed by the Brooke family between 1841 and 1946. During World War II, it was occupied by the Japanese for three years. After the war, the last White Rajah, Charles Vyner Brooke, ceded Sarawak to Britain, and in 1946 it became a British Crown Colony. On 22 July 1963, Sarawak was granted self-government by the British. Following this, it became one of the founding members of the Federation of Malaysia, established on 16 September 1963. However, the federation was opposed by Indonesia, and this led to the three-year Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation. From 1960 to 1990, Sarawak experienced a communist insurgency.

Radio Free Sarawak

Radio Free Sarawak is a pirate radio station established by journalist Clare Rewcastle Brown and helmed by former Cats FM presenter Peter John Jaban, Christina Suntai who graduated from Florida Technical College in computer science and computer programming, and Michael Ngau. First broadcast on 16 November 2010, the station can be received by shortwave on 15420 kHz. It also produced podcasts for its programmes daily from 1100–1300 UTC or 7:00–9:00 pm at Sarawak local time (UTC+8). The station received wide publicity in Malaysia after the brief disappearance of Jaban. However it was later discovered that he had gone into hiding voluntarily. On 15 November 2014, the radio suspended its shortwave transmission services and claimed the Sarawak state government has jammed its service.

Bubur pedas

Bubur pedas is a traditional porridge dish for the Malays both in Sambas and Sarawak. In Sarawak, it is usually served during Ramadan after the Muslim ending their fast on the Iftar time.

Like the rest of Malaysian cuisine, Sarawak food is based on staples such as rice but there is a great variety of other ingredients and food preparations due to the influence of the state’s varied geography and indigenous cultures quite distinct from the regional cuisines of the Peninsular Malaysia. Sarawak is famous for its multi-ethnic population. As the homeland of many unique communities, Sarawak has a variety of cuisines rarely found elsewhere in Malaysia. The uniqueness of Sarawak well depend on it ethnic groups. Every native group in Sarawak has their own lifestyle, traditions, cultures and also foods. Sarawak cuisine is less spicy and has a subtle in taste. It uses fresh seafood and natural herbs like turmeric, lemongrass, ginger, lime and tapioca leaves. These ingredients are not only easily available, but also add a hint of aroma, texture and freshness to the delicacies. Food is one of the most cultural identities for natives group in Sarawak with each ethnic has their own delicacies. The Iban popular with “tubu” (stems), “tuak” and “pansuh”, the Malay with “bubur pedas” (porridge) and “kek lapis Sarawak”, the Bidayuh with “asam siok” and “sup ponas Bidayuh”, the Melanau with “tebaloi”, “sagu” and “umai” and Orang Ulu well known with “garam barrio”, “kikid” (broth), “tengayen”, and “urum giruq” (pudding).
