Savanta is a market research consultancy based in London, England. Established in 2003 as Communicate Research Ltd, then ComRes, it was a founding member of the British Polling Council in 2004, and, by 2016, it was described one of the UK's "most respected" polling companies. [1] [2] In 2022, it became known as Savanta. [3] [4]

Contents

The company is prominent in the British media through its regular voting intention polls for ITV News, the Daily Mail , and for its surveys of legislators in Westminster and Brussels. [5] [6] Other media outlets such as The Independent, the BBC, and Sky News also commission Savanta ComRes research. [7] [8]

It has offices in Westminster and Brussels among other locations and works with clients across business, government, and the voluntary sector. [9]

History

Founded by current Chairman Andrew Hawkins in 2003, ComRes originally focused on research in the political sphere. In 2010, it was named Pollster of the Year at the Public Affairs Awards. [10]

In recent years, the business has expanded to develop expertise in a wider range of sectors, including financial services, education, healthcare, transport, and the voluntary sector. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]

It won the Market Research Society's Public Policy & Social Research Award in 2014, for its research on behalf of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment. [16]

The company rebranded as Savanta ComRes in 2019 when it was sold to Savanta for an undisclosed amount. [17]

Methodology

Savanta ComRes uses a range of methodologies to conduct quantitative and qualitative research. These include telephone, face-to-face, and online surveys, focus groups, consultations, and social media monitoring. [18]

As a registered market research agency, Savanta ComRes is exempt from the UK's Telephone Preference Service, and can therefore conduct computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) across the country. [19] It continues to conduct its national voting intention surveys via this methodology. [20]

The company also provides data analytics such as market segmentation, regression analysis, MaxDiff, and conjoint analysis. [21]

Poll archive

The company makes freely available its political voting intention polls on its website along with results from regular surveys. [22]

An election exit poll is a poll of voters taken immediately after they have exited the polling stations. A similar poll conducted before actual voters have voted is called an entrance poll. SurveyUSA is a polling firm in the United States. It conducts market research for corporations and interest groups, but is best known for conducting opinion polls for various political offices and questions. SurveyUSA conducts these opinion polls under contract by over 50 television stations . The difference between SurveyUSA and other telephone polling firms is twofold. First, SurveyUSA does not use live call center employees, but an automated system. Taped questions are asked of the respondent by a professional announcer, and the respondent is invited to press a button on their touch tone telephone or record a message at a prompt designating their selection. Secondly, SurveyUSA uses more concise language, especially for ballot propositions, than competitors. This can lead to diverging results, such as for California Proposition 76, where one version of the SurveyUSA question with a one sentence description, polled significantly differently compared to another version with a three sentence description.

The referendum on EU membership took place on 23 June 2016. Opinion polling for the United Kingdom European Union membership referendum was ongoing in the months between the announcement of a referendum and the referendum polling day. Polls on the general principle of the UK's membership of the European Union were carried out for a number of years prior to the referendum. Opinion polls of voters in general tended to show roughly equal proportions in favour of remaining and leaving. Polls of business leaders, scientists, and lawyers showed majorities in favour of remaining. Among non-British citizens in other EU member states, polling suggested that a majority were in favour of the UK remaining in the EU in principle, but that a similarly sized majority believed that if the UK were only able to remain in the EU on renegotiated terms then it should leave.
