Shamrock Rovers II was the reserve team of Shamrock Rovers. Throughout its history Rovers have entered reserve teams in various leagues including the Leinster Senior League, the League of Ireland B Division, the A Championship and the League of Ireland First Division.
Between the 1920s and the 1960s Shamrock Rovers B played in the Leinster Senior League. They were the Senior Division champions twice, in 1924–25 and 1939–40. On both occasions Jimmy Dunne played a leading role. In 1924–25 the young Jimmy Dunne was kept out of the Rovers first team by the legendary forward-line known as the "Four F's" – Billy Farrell, Bob Fullam, John Fagan and John Joe Flood. However Dunne played regularly for the reserve team, helping them win both the Leinster Senior League and the LFA Metropolitan Cup, the league cup of the Leinster Senior League. During the 1939–40 season Dunne was the team's player-coach. Once again Rovers B completed a double by also winning the LFA Metropolitan Cup. Rovers B also won the Metropolitan Cup on six further occasions. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Between 1964–65 and 2004–05, Shamrock Rovers B played in the League of Ireland B Division. Together with Home Farm, Bray Wanderers, Athlone Town and the reserve teams of Shelbourne, Bohemians, St Patrick's Athletic, Dundalk, Drumcondra and Drogheda, they had been founding members of the B Division in 1964–65. In 1967–68 Shamrock Rovers B won the Blackthorn Trophy which was awarded to the overall winners of the league. [6] Rovers B went on to win three more league titles in 1984–85, 1986–87 and 1995–96. Between 2008 and 2011, Rovers' reserve team competed in the A Championship. Because of the name of the league, the team was referred to as Shamrock Rovers A. The team was managed by Andrew Myler. With Myler in charge Rovers won the 2009 A Championship [8] [9] and the 2010 League of Ireland U20 Division.
In December 2013 Rovers received permission from the Football Association of Ireland to enter a team in the 2014 League of Ireland First Division under the name Shamrock Rovers B. [10] They took the place vacated after Mervue United and Salthill Devon withdrew from the league to make way for Galway F.C. [10] [11] [12] However, after a disappointing season, during which they finished sixth, the club decided it was not financially viable to continue in the league and they subsequently withdrew. Rovers B were replaced in the 2015 First Division by Cabinteely. [13] [14]
An announcement was made in January 2020 that a team using the name Shamrock Rovers II would be entering that seasons League of Ireland First Division. [15] The club finished in 8th place under manager Aidan Price. On 20 February 2021 it was announced that Shamrock Rovers II would not participate in the 2021 League of Ireland First Division, as the Football Association of Ireland opted to replace the team with newly formed Limerick club Treaty United. This left Rovers II and newly formed Dublin County without a place in the league, despite Rovers II passing the league's licensing procedure. [16] [17] [18]

It is currently contested by LFA affiliated League of Ireland clubs, Leinster Senior League Senior Division clubs and invited teams from the various LFA affiliated junior leagues. Before the introduction of the FAI Cup, it was considered the major cup competition for clubs in what is now the Republic of Ireland. It is also the oldest association football cup competition in the Republic of Ireland.
James Dunne was an Irish footballer who played for, among others, Shamrock Rovers, Sheffield United, Arsenal and Southampton. Dunne was also a dual internationalist and played for both Ireland teams: the FAI XI and the IFA XI.
Salthill Devon Football Club is an Irish association football club originally based in Salthill, Galway. Their senior team currently plays in the Galway & District League. They have previously played in the Connacht Senior League, the A Championship and the League of Ireland First Division. In 2012 they played under the name SD Galway. Since 2005 Salthill Devon have hosted a youth tournament known as the Galway Cup.
The League of Ireland First Division, also known as the SSE Airtricity League First Division for sponsorship reasons, is the second-highest division in both the League of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland football league system. The division was formed in 1985 as it replaced the League of Ireland B Division as the League of Ireland's second level division. Since 2003 the First Division has operated as a summer league. The division is contested by 10 clubs.
Bray Unknowns Football Club was an Irish association football club based in Bray, County Wicklow. During the 1920s and 1930s the Unknowns were the dominant football club in Bray, playing in the League of Ireland for nineteen seasons from 1924–25 to 1942–43. However, in the 1950s, Bray Wanderers emerged as the town's strongest team, enjoying success in both the Leinster Senior League and the FAI Intermediate Cup. During the 1960s both clubs were in decline. In 1973, after co-existing for nearly fifty years, the two clubs effectively merged under the Wanderers name.

The A Championship, also known as the Newstalk A Championship, was an association football league featuring League of Ireland reserve teams and emerging senior teams. It was a third level league in the Republic of Ireland football league system. It was formed in 2008 and disbanded following the 2011 season. Between 2009 and 2011 the league was sponsored by Newstalk. It was effectively absorbed into the League of Ireland U19 Division.
Mervue United A.F.C. is an Irish association football club based in Mervue, Galway. Their senior men's team currently plays in the Galway & District League. The club has previously fielded teams in the Connacht Senior League, the League of Ireland U21 Division, the A Championship and the League of Ireland First Division.
The Connacht Senior League was an association football league featuring amateur, intermediate, and League of Ireland reserve teams affiliated to the Connacht Football Association. It was a third level league in the Republic of Ireland football league system. An earlier provincial league, the Western League, had been active, on and off, since the 1930s before the Connacht Football Association decided to establish a more permanent league. The CSL was active between 1981 and 2000. In 2013 discussions were held about relaunching the league.
The Leinster Senior League Senior Division is the top division of the Leinster Senior League. It is organized by the Leinster Football Association. Together with the Munster Senior League Senior Premier Division and the Ulster Senior League Senior Division, it forms the third level of the Republic of Ireland football league system. Formed in 1896, it is the oldest association football league in what is now the Republic of Ireland. Shelbourne have won the most titles. However, in more recent seasons Crumlin United, Cherry Orchard, Wayside Celtic and Bangor Celtic have been the divisions strongest teams. In 2014–15 Bluebell United were Leinster Senior League champions, 27 years after winning their previous title. Clubs from this division play in the Leinster Senior Cup, the FAI Cup, the FAI Intermediate Cup and the FAI Junior Cup. In recent seasons the winners of the Senior Division have also been invited to play in the League of Ireland Cup.
The 2009 A Championship was the second season of the A Championship in Ireland. The season was sponsored by Newstalk. The league featured 18 teams. Shamrock Rovers A were the champions while the runners up, Salthill Devon, were promoted to the First Division.
The 2013 FAI Senior Challenge Cup, also known as the 2013 FAI Ford Senior Cup, was the 93rd season of the national football competition of the Republic of Ireland. The winners of the competition earned a spot in the first qualifying round of the 2014-15 UEFA Europa League.
St. Patrick's C.Y.F.C. is an Irish association football club based in Ringsend, Dublin. Their senior team play in the Leinster Senior League Senior Division. They also regularly compete in the FAI Cup, the FAI Intermediate Cup, the FAI Junior Cup and the Leinster Senior Cup. St. Pat's also have reserve teams playing in the Leinster Senior League and enter teams in the Dublin & District Schoolboy League.
The LFA President's Cup was an association football cup competition featuring League of Ireland clubs affiliated to the Leinster Football Association. It was played for between 1930 and 2002. It was a de facto national super cup and on twenty four occasions featured the League of Ireland champions against the FAI Cup winners. The Football Association of Ireland also organised similar competitions, such as the Top Four Cup and the FAI Super Cup, both of which co-existed with the LFA President's Cup. Since 2014 the FAI has organised their own similarly named super cup, the President's Cup.
The League of Ireland B Division is a former league within the Republic of Ireland football league system. Its debut season was 1964–65. It was originally a second level league. However following the emergence of the League of Ireland First Division in 1985–86 it became a third level league. Like the later A Championship, the League of Ireland B included a mixture of League of Ireland reserve teams and the first teams of emerging clubs. There was no relegation and promotion to and from the senior League of Ireland division. However a number of B Division teams, including Home Farm, Athlone Town, UCD, Longford Town and Monaghan United, were subsequently elected to the senior division. In later seasons the league was usually referred to as the Reserve Division. In 2000 it was replaced by the League of Ireland U21 Division.
The 2015–16 Leinster Senior Cup, was the 115th staging of the Leinster Senior Cup association football competition.
The 2014 League of Ireland First Division season was the 30th season of the League of Ireland First Division. The First Division was contested by eight teams and Longford Town won the title. Galway were also promoted.
The League of Ireland U19 Division is the under-19 division of the League of Ireland. The current division is the successor of earlier U21 and U20 divisions. Like the Premier Division and First Division, the U19 Division is currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result it is also known as the SSE Airtricity U19 League. The earlier U21 and U20 divisions were sponsored by Eircom and as a result were referred to as the Eircom U21 League or the Eircom U20 League. The division is also sometimes referred to as the Dr Tony O'Neill League because the winners are awarded the Dr Tony O'Neill Cup. In 2016 Cork City became the first team to represent the division in the UEFA Youth League.
The 2019 season was St. Patrick's Athletic F.C.'s 90th year in existence and was the Supersaint's 68th consecutive season in the top-flight of Irish football. It was the first season Harry Kenny took charge of the club, following Liam Buckley's spell in charge for the previous seven seasons. The fixtures were announced on 19 December 2018, with the Saints facing Cork City at home on the opening day of the season for the second year in a row, with the Inchicore side set to play champions Dundalk away from home on the final night of the season. Harry Kenny left his post on the 24th August following a 3–1 loss away to bottom of the table UCD in the FAI Cup. He was replaced by Stephen O'Donnell on the 31st August, his first managerial role. Pats finished 5th in the league and won the Leinster Senior Cup, playing the semi-final and final with their underage sides after the league season had ended for the senior team.
The 2019 Leinster Senior Cup was the 118th staging of the Leinster Football Association's primary competition. It included all Leinster based League of Ireland clubs from the First Division and Premier Division, as well as a selection of intermediate level sides. The competition was won by St Patrick's Athletic
