Novaya Gazeta, now Novaya Gazeta Europe, is a Latvia-based independent Russian newspaper. It relocated to Riga, Latvia, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It is known for its critical and investigative coverage of Russian political and social affairs, the horrors of the Chechen wars, corruption among the ruling elite, and increasing authoritarianism in Russia. It was formerly published in Moscow until shortly after the war began, in regions within Russia, and in some foreign countries. The print edition is published on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; English-language articles on the website are published on a weekly basis in the form of the Russia, Explained newsletter. As of 2023, the newspaper had a daily print circulation of 108,000, and online visits of 613,000.

The battle of Vuhledar is a military engagement in the eastern theatre of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, around the town of Vuhledar in western Donetsk Oblast, near the pre-invasion line of contact between Ukraine and the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. Ukrainian commanders have described it as the largest tank battle of the Russo-Ukrainian War to date.
Since 19 September 2022, a military campaign has taken place along a 60-km frontline in western parts of Luhansk Oblast and far-eastern parts of Kharkiv Oblast amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is currently deployed by Russia in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to an RFE/RL investigation, "Redut" is fully controlled and managed by GRU.
Oleg Yuryevich Tsokov was an Uzbek-born Russian lieutenant general who served in the Russian Ground Forces as deputy commander of the Southern Military District. He was killed in 2023 by a missile strike during a Ukrainian counteroffensive against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive was a major offensive against Russian forces occupying its territory with a goal of breaching the front lines. Efforts were made in many directions, primarily in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, among others. In total, Ukraine recaptured 14 villages in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, with a total pre-war population of around 5,000 but took heavy casualties. Western officials have said that such losses were not unexpected for attacking forces. The counteroffensive was widely regarded as a failure but also a crucial moment in the war.

Russian forces also were losing 150-300 marines a day near Vuhledar, Dmytrashkivskyi said. He estimated the brigade to have comprised some 5,000 soldiers in all, whose members had been killed, wounded or taken prisoner.
