Bruce Robert Jacob is a former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Florida during the early 1960s. He represented Louie L. Wainwright,the Director of the Florida Division of Corrections,in the Supreme Court case of Gideon v. Wainwright,decided in March 1963,regarding the right to counsel of indigent defendants in non-capital felony cases in state courts. The attorney representing the Petitioner,Clarence Gideon,was Abe Fortas,a Washington,D.C. lawyer who later became a Justice of the Supreme Court. The previous 1942 Supreme Court case of Betts v. Brady required the appointment of counsel for an indigent defendant at state expense if there was a “special circumstance”present in the case which made it necessary for counsel to be provided for the defendant to receive a fair trial. For example,if the defendant was indigent and was extremely young,or lacked education or experience,was unfamiliar with court procedures,or if the charges against him were complex,the trial court was required under the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to appoint counsel. Jacob argued against any extension of the defendant's right to counsel. The Court in Gideon overruled Betts and required state courts to appoint attorneys for defendants in all felony prosecutions.

Finlay Park,at 14 acres (57,000 m2),is the largest and most visited park in downtown Columbia,South Carolina. The park opened in 1991. Initially named Sidney Park,it was renamed after a former Columbia mayor Kirkman Finlay in 1994. In the park there was a scenic waterfall along with cascading mountain type stream falling to the park lake. This waterfall has remained broken for the better half of two years. There are picnic tables,two playground areas and a cafe. The park was a favorite for families,but is now home to the city's largest population of homeless people. Problems with the park have persisted and prompted local charity organizations to begin weekly food services to the people living on the park's benches. Outdoor movies are played on Friday nights during the summer months.

Columbia High School a public high school in the St. Andrews area of Columbia,South Carolina,United States. Columbia High School was originally housed in the former Columbia Female Academy at 1323 Washington Street at the corner with Marion Street. This building was leased to the Richland County Commissioners of Schools in 1884. The school became Columbia's first public high school in 1895 as the Washington Street School. The original Columbia High School building was constructed in 1915 on that site. The current building was constructed in 1975.
