TVP3 Katowice a.k.a. TV Katowice also Television Katowice is one of the regional branches of the TVP, Poland's public television broadcaster. It serves the entire Silesian Voivodeship with particular dedication to the Metropolis GZM and Katowice metropolitan area.

History

Telewizja Katowice opened on 3 December 1957 at 4pm, covering much of southern Poland, as well as parts of Czechoslovakia via overspill. [2]

The channel was one of the nine regional TVP3 stations that converted to high definition on 15 December 2023. [3] As an effect of the 2023 Polish public media crisis, TVP3 Katowice was suspended on 20 December 2023, being replaced by TVP2 in the interim; [4] the station restarted on 26 December. [5]

Languages

Generally, broadcasts are conducted in Polish. Some broadcasts are conducted in the Silesian language (example U nos w Bytkowie, Patefon ujka Ericha, Holy War) and some in German (example Schlesien Journal).

Broadcast area

Broadcast area: generally Upper Silesia - mainly Silesian Voivodeship [6] and Opole Voivodeship, furthermore small part (about 1/4) of Lesser Poland Voivodeship, [6] very small part of Łódź Voivodeship [6] and Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship [6] in Poland, and also very small part of Moravian-Silesian Region [6] in Czech Republic and very small part of Slovakia (north-western part of Žilina Region [6] ).

Terrestrial transmitters and editorial offices

The TV center is located in Katowice, Television street no 1 in main part of Metropolis GZM. The main tower has a height of 90 meters. The secondary transmitter lies in Kosztowy - district of Mysłowice (suburb of Katowice), which has a height of 355 meters (the second tallest radio mast in Poland). Beyond this the signal is repeated by six more [7] transmitters. Local redaction section (editorial offices) are found in Rybnik, Bielsko-Biała and Częstochowa.

TVP Info is a Polish free-to-air television news channel, run by the public state broadcaster TVP. It is focused on newscasts, mainly broadcasting nationwide news bulletins. Until 20 December 2023, its main offices were located in the Television Information Agency building at Warsaw Insurgents Square; since 29 December 2023 the channel's activities are carried out from the main TVP building on Woronicza Street, Warsaw.

Television in Poland was introduced on an experimental basis in 1937. It was state owned, and was interrupted by the Second World War in 1939. Television returned to Poland in 1952 and for several decades was controlled by the communist government. Colour television was introduced in Poland in 1971. Private television stations in Poland appeared around the time of the fall of communism, with PTV Echo becoming the first private station in Poland.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">TVP3</span> Polish public regional television channel

TVP3 is a Polish TV channel, run by the public broadcaster, TVP and dedicated to the country's regions. It has regional branches in most of the major Polish cities and, similarly to the France 3 in France or Rai Tre in Italy, for a couple of hours every day it broadcast regional programming, including local news and reports. On 20 December 2023, TVP3's signal was shut down and instead, TVP2 started being broadcast. On the same day, the website was shut down and started redirecting to the main TVP website, but on 26 December 2023, the channel returned to the air.

Białystok has a wide variety of media outlets serving the city and surrounding region. There are two locally published daily newspapers, Gazeta Współczesna and Kurier Poranny. In addition two national papers have local bureaus. There are a number of national and locally produced television and radio channels available both over-the-air from the nearby RTCN Białystok (Krynice) Mast, the seventh highest structure in Poland, in addition to transmitter sites within the city. There is also a cable television system available within the city. The city has two campus radio stations; Radiosupeł at the Medical University of Białystok and Radio Akadera at the Białystok Technical University.

TVS is the first regional Silesia commercial DVB-T free-to-air television station with information and entertainment profile. The TVS television channel is directed mainly to the inhabitants of the Silesian Voivodeship, covering the historical lands of Upper Silesia and Lesser Poland. The company and its television studios are headquartered at Grunwaldzki Square in Katowice in the Metropolis GZM. TVS was created as a competitor to the public service broadcaster TVP3 Katowice. TVS started broadcasting on 29 March 2008 at 10:00 am in 16:9 format.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019</span> International song competition for youth

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019 was the seventeenth edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by Telewizja Polska (TVP) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). It was held on 24 November 2019, at the Gliwice Arena in Gliwice, Poland, following the country's victory at the 2018 contest in Minsk, Belarus, with the song "Anyone I Want to Be", performed by Roksana Węgiel. It was the first time Poland had hosted the contest, as well as the first Eurovision event to be held in the country since the Eurovision Young Dancers 2013.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Autonomy March</span>

The Autonomy March is a demonstration that has taken place annually since 2007 around the 15th of July in Katowice, Upper Silesia, Poland. It consists of a march through the streets of Katowice in front of the Voivodeship Office. According to the organizers, the March is a manifestation of support for the idea to restore autonomy to Upper Silesia in a modern form, modeled on Spanish or German solutions.

<i>19.30</i> Polish television news program

19.30 is the main Polish television news program produced by Telewizja Polska (TVP) and broadcast on TVP1, TVP Polonia, TVP Info and TVP Wilno. The main edition is transmitted daily at 7:30 p.m. It premiered on December 21, 2023 and succeeded Wiadomości, which was canceled following the management changes at TVP days before.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Telewizja Republika</span> Television channel

Telewizja Republika or TV Republika is a Polish television station, whose editor-in-chief is Tomasz Sakiewicz. The channel can be received via satellite, via the Internet and terrestrial in the DVB-T system, as well as in the DVB-T2 system. From 2022, the channel broadcasts its program 24 hours a day. The live portion of its output in Polish is broadcast every day for 16 hours, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., while between 11:00 p.m. and midnight, the programs of the English-speaking editorial staff of the channel are broadcast.
