Talpa Radio(formerly: 538 Group and Sky Radio Group) is a radio company of Talpa Network , in which various radio and television activities are housed.
The company started in 2002 when John de Mol Jr. bought Noordzee FM from Strengholt and SBS Radio, the radio station were he started his media career as a 16 year old. [1] He placed the radio station in the company Talpa Radio, Talpa Radio would acquire Radio 10 in 2003. [2] In 2005 De Mol wanted to acquire the market leader Radio 538, but wasn't allowed due to a law in the Netherlands that prevented one party to have multiple unconditional frequency packages in possession. Therefore Noordzee FM was sold to De Persgroep in order to acquire Radio 538. [3] [4]
RTL Nederland and John de Mol struck a deal in 2017 in which RTL would acquire the television channel Tien and Radio 538, John de Mol would acquire a 26% stake in RTL. Radio 10 was initially excluded from the deal, but eventually acquired in 2010 from Talpa Radio and SLAM!FM from Lex Harding in 2011 by the consortium. [5] [6] Due to John de Mol's partial acquisition of SBS Broadcasting B.V. in 2011 the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets forced him to sell his stake in RTL Nederland. In this deal - which came into effect in 2012 - RTL would buy back the shares of De Mol and De Mol would acquire the radio stations from RTL and formed the 538 Group, which became a subsidiary of John de Mol's Talpa Holding. [7] Talpa Holding sold radio station Radio 10 to RadioCorp in 2013, RadioCorp already owned 100% NL . With this deal Talpa Holding would acquire a 25% stake in RadioCorp. This stake would rise to 100% in 2016 when Talpa Holding acquired the remaining 75%, so Talpa would fully own Radio 538, SLAM!FM, Radio 10 and 100% NL. The stations SLAM!FM and 100% FM however were immediately sold to Karl Habsburg, one of the original owners of RadioCorp. [8] De Mol sold these stations so he could form a joint-venture with Telegraaf Media Group 's Sky Radio Group in 2016 of which Talpa would own 77%, the joint venture included the stations Radio Veronica , Radio 10, Sky Radio and Radio 538 and advertisement agency One Media Sales. [9]
Following the rest of 2016 and 2017 De Mol wanted to acquire the parent company of his joint-venture partner Telegraaf Media Group for his newly formed Talpa Network , a bidding war between Talpa and Mediahuis erupted. De Mol started buying up stock during this process and reached 29.16% of the shares, gave a higher bid for the rest of the shares, but was turned down when the other shareholders chose a deal with Mediahuis. In August 2017 De Mol stopped his acquisition attempt, but kept his share of Telegraaf Media Group. [10] This construction lasted until December of 2017 when Mediahuis acquired the remaining shares and De Mol acquired the 538 Group-Sky Radio Group joint-venture, which he renamed Talpa Radio. [11]
After the complete acquisition of SBS Broadcasting in 2017, John de Mol sought a partnership with RTL Nederland. In his opinion there wasn’t enough space in the Dutch market for two major networks, RTL shut down his offer. [12] However in June 2021 RTL Nederland and Talpa Network announced plans for a merger, pending approval by the European Commission and the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets. In the new conglomerate, RTL Nederland is to hold 70% of the shares and Talpa Holding 30%. Talpa Entertainment Productions and Talpa Concepts won't be a part of the merger. [13] Both parties reasoned that a merger was the only solution to an ever growing presence of foreign media parties, giving space to a single commercial Dutch media company that's capable of producing specifically for the Dutch market. Critics however claimed that the failing of Talpa Network is the reason behind the merger. [14] In January 2022 the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets stated that it could not approve the merger as of yet and that further investigation to the consequences of price, quality and innovation is necessary. [15]
Radio 538 is a Dutch commercial radio station that was founded in Hilversum, Netherlands in 1992. It is the second-most listened to radio station in the Netherlands. Radio 538 refers to the wavelength on which Radio Veronica used to broadcast in the 1970s. The station is owned by Talpa Network. Mostly targeting a young audience, the station plays a mix of music from the decades 1980s to today, currently genres were dance, R&B, pop, and rock music. The music selection is mainly based on the Dutch Top 40 chart. Its breakfast and drive-time shows are talk-intensive.
Classicnl is a classical music radio station in the Netherlands, which at one time broadcast on FM, but is now available nationally on DAB+, cable and internationally on the Internet. The station is owned by the Bakker Oosterbeek Beheer BV which acquired the station from Telegraaf Media Groep which owned the radio station from 2006 until November 2017. The radio station was known as Classic FM from 1994 until 1 October 2019.
SLAM! is a Dutch commercial national radio station that plays current-based rhythmic and dance hits. SLAM! has a strong commitment in breaking new dance music. The playlist and presentation serves as a combination of 538 and 3FM. The station is broadcast in the Netherlands and can be received via the either FM, Internet (worldwide) and cable. The broadcasting building and studios of SLAM! are located in Naarden, North Holland. In 2012, it was announced that SLAM! has the largest market share among the country's young people (16.8%). It is a sister station of 100% NL.
Johannes Hendrikus Hubert "John" de Mol Jr. is a Dutch media tycoon. De Mol is one of the men behind production companies Endemol and Talpa. He created the reality television formats Big Brother, Star Academy and The Voice, and the game shows Fear Factor and Deal or No Deal.
RTL 4 is a Dutch free TV channel; it is the most-watched commercial station in the country, popular especially with those aged between 20 and 49. Tien, previously known as Talpa, was the name of a commercial television channel in the Netherlands. Tien opened on August 13, 2005 as Talpa, following a name dispute with SBS Broadcasting. SBS owned the trademark "TV10" and objected to the use of the word Tien. The owner of Tien, Dutch media mogul John de Mol, decided to rebrand the channel as Talpa, the Latin word for "mole", which is mol in Dutch. Subsequently Talpa became the name of De Mol's holding company.
RTL 7 is a Dutch free-to-cable television channel that was launched as Veronica on 1 September 1995. RTL 7 is RTL Nederland's "men's channel" with action films, reality television about crime and professions, soccer, motorsport and talk shows about sports. During daytime business and financial news channel RTL Z was broadcasting on RTL 7 until RTL Nederland revamped RTL Z into a 24-hours channel on 7 September 2015.

RTL 8 is a Dutch free-to-cable television channel that was launched on 18 August 2007 replacing Tien, previously known as Talpa. RTL 8's main target audience consists of women. It broadcasts soap operas, talk shows, films and reruns of programmes from its sister RTL channels. In the mornings and late afternoons children's channel RTL Telekids is broadcasting on RTL 8. Officially RTL 8, along with all other Dutch RTL channels, is broadcasting under a Luxembourg television license. Therefore, the channel is also headquartered in Luxembourg. By doing this RTL can avoid more severe control by the Dutch media authorities, as Luxembourg does not have a strict authority that regulates its broadcasters. Dutch citizens need a subscription to a cable, satellite, IPTV, or DVB-T provider to view the channel. All providers include the channel in their base package.
Radio 10 is a Dutch commercial radio station that mostly focuses on songs from the 1970s to 2000s, with a moderate amount of mid-1960s' and 2010s' hits. It is one of the oldest, still remaining, commercial radio stations of the Netherlands.
