The Lady from the Shanghai Cinema (Portuguese : A Dama do Cine Shanghai) is a 1988 Brazilian thriller film directed by Guilherme de Almeida Prado. [1] [2] The film borrows some references from Hollywood films noirs of the 1940s, mainly Orson Welles' The Lady from Shanghai ; its name is a play on the title of Welles's film. [2] [4]

Plot

Lucas (Antônio Fagundes), an estate agent, becomes fascinated by Suzana (Maitê Proença), a woman who looks almost exactly like an actress in the film he is watching. They start an affair, but she is married to Desdino, a gangster (Paulo Villaça), exposing Lucas to a criminal world of violence and corruption. [2] [5] [6]

At the 16th Festival de Gramado, it was elected the Best Film by the jury and critics, receiving also Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Scenography, and Best Editing awards. [7] The Lady From the Shanghai Cinema won the Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Score, and Best Art Director at the 6th Bogota Film Festival. [8]

The Festival do Rio is an international film festival in Rio de Janeiro. The festival was the result of a 1999 merger of two previous film festivals, the Rio Cine Festival and the Mostra Banco Nacional de Cinema. The 1st Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil ceremony, presented by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil, honored the best audiovisual productions of 1999. It took place on February 12, 2000, at the Palácio Quitandinha in the city of Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro. During the ceremony, the Ministry of Culture presented the Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil in 17 categories. The ceremony, televised by TV Cultura and Televisão Educativa, was directed by José Possi Neto and hosted by actress Regina Casé.

The 2nd Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil ceremony, presented by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil, honored the best audiovisual productions of 2000 and took place on February 10, 2001, at the Palácio Quitandinha in the city of Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro beginning at 8:30 p.m. BRT.
