Town Higher Secondary School is a school in Kumbakonam, a town in the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
This school was founded as a primary school on 14 April 1864 by Martin, a retired English head constable at the Bhagavath Padithurai Mandapam. [1] Many people, including Ragunathaswami Rao, Rao Bhagadhur T. Gopal Rao and Gopu Subburaya Chettiar played a pivotal role in the growth of the school. [2] The Chairman of Kumbakonam Municipality, Shri. P. Thambusamy Mudaliar offered his plantain grove of 100,800 square feet for the school, at a low price. [2] The foundation stone for the main building was laid by Porter on 29 December 1881.
In 1885, the two houses in which the school had functioned were sold at the cost of Rs. 10,500. In 1887, a committee that consisted P. Thambusamy Mudaliar, A.C. Narayana Iyer and V. Krishna Iyer was formed to supervise the construction of the school building. Taking a school which was in Pondicherry as a model, this school was constructed in 1891 at the cost of Rs. 58,000. In 1892, the building was opened by Dr. Duncan, Director of School Education.
Since its inception, the institution was always run by a group of people belonging to Kumbakonam town. It is today an aided institution of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The motto of this school is 'TRUTH, HONOUR, SERVICE AND SACRIFICE'. [1]
In July 1978, the school was upgraded to a higher secondary school. K. Baladandayuthapani is the current secretary and correspondent of the school while R. Raman is the headmaster. The school releases a bimonthly magazine called HARMONY to develop the writing skills of the students in English. It also has an English Literary Club.
In January 2014, the school celebrated its 150th year.

Semmangudi Radhakrishna Srinivasa Iyer was an Indian Carnatic vocalist. He was the youngest recipient of the Sangeetha Kalanidhi awarded by the Music Academy in 1947, a distinction he holds to this day as of 2023, probably the only musician to receive that honour before reaching 40. He was affectionately addressed as "Semmangudi Maama" by his disciples. He was also considered the "Pitamaha" or the grand sire of modern Carnatic Music. He was conferred with an honorary doctorate by University of Kerala in 1979.

Mohanan Chandrasekaran is a Carnatic classical violinist from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He was born in Calcutta, on 11 December 1937 as the younger of the two sons of T.N. Mohanan and Charubala Mohanan, a violinist herself. He was awarded the Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 2005. Chandrasekharan began playing the violin at the age of 11, after which he went on to accompany many musicians in the field of Carnatic music. Having lost his eyesight at the age of two, he overcame his difficulty by music. He is also considered an expert in the laya (tempo) aspects, recognizing and adapting to intricate rhythmic patterns. Sri Chandrasekharan also presents vocal concerts, and sometimes sings along during his solo violin recitals. He has composed various musical forms in different languages, and has travelled the world performing. He often performs violin duet concerts with his daughter Smt. G. Bharathi. He has accompanied several masters of Carnatic music including Maharajapuram Santhanam, G. N. Balasubramaniam, Madurai Mani Iyer, Dr. K J Yesudas, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, flute N. Ramani, K. V. Narayanaswamy, T. N. Seshagopalan, D. K. Jayaraman, and T. K. GovindaRao.
Ramanathapuram C. S. Murugabhoopathy, popularly referred to as CSM, was one of the most distinguished Mridanga maestros of the 20th century. Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar Higher Secondary School is a government-aided higher secondary school in Ambattur. This school was established to preserve the memory of Sir Arcot Ramaswami Mudaliar, who was closely associated with the birth and growth of Tube Investments of India as its founder, chairman and later as the first president of the company. Hence the first school of the AMM Charities Trust started in 1958 was named after him. The initial infrastructure of the school was created at a cost of Rs. 60 lakhs on a 13-acre plot in Ambattur. Vellore G. Ramabhadran was a Mridangam artiste from Tamil Nadu, India. He was awarded the Madras Music Academy's Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 2004.
L. Venkatakrishna Iyer was an Indian civil engineer and the Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department of the State of Tamil Nadu. It was Iyer who did the survey and submitted the initial proposal for building a reservoir across Godavari river near Polavaram in 1941 which was later commissioned as Polavaram Project. An alumnus of the Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam, he was among the few who assisted Chinnaswami Rajam in founding Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) and sat on the core committee which oversaw the establishment of the institution. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1961, for his contributions to society.
