Turn are an Irish band.

History

Turn formed in 1998 when lead singer/guitarist Ollie Cole and drummer Ian Melady joined forces with Dublin bass player Gavin Fox, whom they met at a local recording studio. Cole and Melady had been friends since youth and had previously formed Pixies-influenced punk band Swampshack. [1]

Through frantic gigging and the release of a few choice 7" singles, Turn started to earn a name for themselves and soon found themselves signed to Infectious Records. Their debut album, Antisocial, soon followed and Turn looked to be on their way to stardom. Infectious, however, were not too interested in releasing any singles from the album and Turn soon found themselves in record company limbo once again.

With their schedule clear, Turn hit the road again playing gigs to get funds for more recording. The In Position EP was the fruit of these labours, a six track snapshot on their own Nurture label in March 2002 which was a taster of what was to come. A double a-side Another Year Over/Summer Song was released in July 2002 with the single going Top 30 in Ireland in its first week. However, Turn's luck was soon to catch up with them again as bassist Gavin Fox left to join Idlewild. [2] His last gig with Turn was on New Year's Eve 2002. [3]

Fox's place was filled by ex-Skindive bassist Alan Lee and recording continued for Turn's second album Forward which was released in May 2003. The album entered the charts at number 16 and became one of the most popular Irish albums of the year. They continued touring through 2003 and 2004 adding Guitarist/Keyboardist, Martin Quinn, who had played with Ian Melady in Little Palace, [4] to the lineup. More bass trouble hit when Alan Lee left and Ollie Cole held open auditions in Dublin for a new bassist. Ciaran Kavanagh of The Rags soon joined up. In the meantime, Turn signed on with Setanta Records and began work on their third album.

Turn's third album Turn LP , eponymous titled, was released in Ireland in September 2005 and entered the Top 30 in its first week. It is due for release in the UK in early 2006. It was shortlisted for the inaugural Choice Music Prize, an industry award to promote quality Irish musicians and bands, and the album was also nominated for the 2006 Meteor Award, while Turn were nominated for "Best Irish Band". They lost on both counts to U2, while that year's Choice Music Prize went to Julie Feeney.

In December 2005, Gavin Fox rejoined for a series of gigs. On 18 July 2006, the group announced that Turn planned one more tour of Ireland, before breaking up. Ollie also added "this has not been an easy decision to make". The band never played this tour. As of 19 July 2006, the www.turn.ie website was shut down. [5]

In August 2012, Ollie Cole announced on his Facebook page that he, along with Gavin Fox, Ian Melady and Ciaran Kavanagh had been rehearsing, and would be performing as Turn for the first time in more than five years at the Electric Picnic in Stradbally, County Laois. He also suggested the possibility of further gigs.

The performance at Electric Picnic was followed by a small Irish tour in December 2012 to say farewell. Turn played their last show in the Spirit Store, Dundalk on 30 December 2012. On 24 October 2013, Turn announced a new show for 28 December 2013. [6]

Turn's music has featured in two U.S. television shows, One Tree Hill , with the song "Close Your Eyes" and Kyle XY , in two separate episodes with the songs "All These Days" and "It's About Nothing".

The 2005 film Boy Eats Girl features the songs "Stop" and "Harder".

Australian soap, Home and Away featured the songs "Close Your Eyes" and "Stop" in 2013.

<i>Warnings/Promises</i> 2005 studio album by Idlewild

Warnings/Promises is the fourth studio album by Scottish rock band Idlewild, released on 7 March 2005 by Parlophone. Following the release of their third studio album The Remote Part (2002), Gavin Fox replaced bassist Bob Fairfoull, and touring guitarist Allan Stewart became a permanent member. They spent the majority of 2003 writing material, before traveling to Malmö, Sweden to record at Tambourine Studios with producer Dave Eringa. After finishing five tracks, they went to Los Angeles to work at Sunset Sound Recorders with producer Tony Hoffer. Due to the laidback nature of the sessions, the band had to re-record everything; recording concluded in October 2004. Described as an college rock and folk rock album, Warnings/Promises emphasized more acoustic instrumentation than its predecessor.

Gavin Bernard Fox is bass player with the band Concerto for Constantine. Gavin is now a lecturer at BIMM Dublin, working alongside former band mate Ollie Cole. He continues to play bass as well as other instruments. He now plays in Dublin indie band "Sack".

Turn is the eponymously titled third full-length offering from the Irish indie trio Turn. Turn offered a more pop/singer songwriter direction for Meath based band. Their first album, Antisocial, had shown a strong Pixies style influence, their second album, Forward, offered an even darker side to the band's sound, but with Turn they showed they were not getting any darker. The album was a mixture of catchy pop tunes such as "It's About Nothing" and "Stop", and also more Elliott Smith inspired tunes, such as "Close Your Eyes" and "Wildside".

Hybrasil are an Irish underground electronica group that formed in the seaside town of Wicklow, Ireland in 2004. The band are named after Brasil, a phantom island featured in many Irish myths. They have released two EP's to date and their debut album, The Monkey Pole, was released in September, 2007.

<i>Forward</i> (Turn album) 2003 album by Turn

Forward was the second album from Turn, a Meath-based indie rock band. Their first album had seen a large interest from Ireland and the UK but it seemed to die away as quickly as it rose due to poor marketing and promotion from Infectious Records. The band were dropped from Infectious Records and created Nurture Records in order to release music. After this, the band struggled to finance and produce 2001's In Position EP, but the EP managed to secure a loyal fan base in Ireland and constant touring helped the band get back on their feet and start recording Forward in 2002. However, tragedy again struck the band when original bass player Gavin Fox left to join Idlewild.

<i>Antisocial</i> (album) 2000 studio album by Turn

Antisocial is the first full-length album released by Turn, an Irish rock trio from Kells, County Meath. Turn began recording the album around 1998 and one of the tracks ("Beretta") appeared on the Check My Ears EP, which the band released in 2000. The album was released on Infectious Records in 2000 to favourable reviews in both the Irish and British press. Constant touring before and after its release gained the band a wide Irish and UK fan base and they played a host of sell-out shows across the two countries.

In Position is a six track EP recorded by Irish band Turn in 2001. It was recorded by the band without any record company involvement after they left Infectious Records in 2000. In Position the song would later be re-recorded and appear on Turn's second full-length album, Forward. The EP was a massive success for the band, securing them a strong following throughout Ireland and giving Turn two of their strongest songs, In Position and Heartattack. However, shortly after the tour that followed the EP's release, original bass player, Gavin Fox left the group to join Scottish Rockers Idlewild.

Mark Greaney is an Irish musician. He is best known as the singer and guitarist in the alternative rock band JJ72, which he fronted from 1996 until 2006. He was later the frontman of Concerto for Constantine and describes himself as "the perpetual writer of a solo record". Greaney is the head of education at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute.

<i>Check My Ears</i> 2000 EP by Turn

Check My Ears is a compilation of the three 7" vinyl singles Turn released throughout 2000. The primary singles were "Facedown", "Beretta" and "Beeswax'". The B Sides that complete the six-track EP are "Truth", "Plan" and "Never Needed".
