Waste Atlas partnership is a non-commercial initiative supported by significant global range non-profit organizations, including D-Waste, ISWA, WtERT, SWEEP-Net, SWAPI, and University of Leeds [1]. [3] [4]

Currently, Waste Atlas hosts waste data for 164 countries; more than 1,800 cities from all over the world and approximately 2,500 waste management facilities (1,626 sanitary landfills, 716 WtE, 129 MBT, 78 BT and 89 of the world’s biggest dumpsites). [5] [6]

Global Correlation Charts and Global Waste Maps

Global Correlation Charts is a set of global charts which correlate waste indicators such as waste generation per capita and collection coverage with socio-economic indicators such as income indicators and human development index. [7]

Waste Atlas Report

1st Annual report

2013 Waste Atlas report is dedicated to global solid waste management assessment and is based on data from 162 countries and 1,773 cities. [9] According to the outcomes of the report, current annual municipal solid waste generation is assessed to about 1.9 billion tonnes with almost 30% of it to remain uncollected. [10] More than half of the world’s population does not have access to a regular refuse collection services, [11] as for the waste collected, 70% of it is led for disposal to landfills and dumpsites, 14.5% is recycled or recovered in formal systems and 11% is led to thermal treatment facilities. It is assessed that 3.5 billion people lack access to even the most elementary form of waste management. [12]

2nd Annual report

2014 Waste Atlas report is dedicated to unsound waste disposal, particularly in dumpsites. The 50 biggest dumpsites around the world are listed with the most important information relating to their operation visualized in a unified way. Data relating to the amount and the type of waste disposed in place, the size, the waste concentration, the number of informal waste pickers, the population and the natural resources within a radius of 10 km and the distance of the nearest settlements are presented. The research relied on crowd-sourcing 59,000 files from 25 countries. [13] The results of the report highlight the health and environmental impacts of dumpsites [14] and show that the 50 biggest active dumpsites affect daily, the lives of 64 million people, a figure almost equal to the population of France, their total waste volume is 0.6-0.8 m3 almost 200-300 times the volume of the Great Pyramid of Giza. [15] The statistical analysis showed that a typical waste dumpsite covers an area of 24 ha equal to around 29 big international football fields. [16]

Rates of household recycling in Ireland have increased dramatically since the late 1990s. The Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the agency with overall responsibility for environmental protection in Ireland and monitors rates of recycling in Ireland along with other measures of environmental conditions in Ireland. The EPA, along with Repak, the principal organisation for packaging recycling in Ireland, report on recycling rates each year. In 2012 Ireland’s municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling rate was 34%, while the rate of packaging recycling reached 79%. The amount of municipal waste generated per person per year in Ireland has fallen significantly in recent years. This figure remains above the European Union annual municipal waste average of 503 kg per person, however. Each local council in Ireland has considerable control over recycling, so recycling practices vary to some extent across the country. Most waste that is not recycled is disposed of in landfill sites.

In the densely populated Hong Kong, waste is a complex issue. The territory generates around 6.4 million tons of waste each year but is able to collect and process only a minimal portion of recyclable waste. By 2019, its existing landfills are expected to be full. The government has introduced waste management schemes and is working to educate the public on the subject. On the commercial side, producers are taking up measures to reduce waste.

Waste management laws govern the transport, treatment, storage, and disposal of all manner of waste, including municipal solid waste, hazardous waste, and nuclear waste, among many other types. Waste laws are generally designed to minimize or eliminate the uncontrolled dispersal of waste materials into the environment in a manner that may cause ecological or biological harm, and include laws designed to reduce the generation of waste and promote or mandate waste recycling. Regulatory efforts include identifying and categorizing waste types and mandating transport, treatment, storage, and disposal practices.

As a nation, Americans generate more waste than any other nation in the world, officially with 4.4 pounds (2.0 kg) of municipal solid waste (MSW) per person per day, with another study estimating 7.1 pounds (3.2 kg) per capita per day. Fifty five percent of this waste is contributed as residential garbage, while the remaining forty five percent of waste in the U.S.'s 'waste stream' comes from manufacturing, retailing, and commercial trade in the U.S. economy. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, Nevada produces the most waste at "[nearly] 8 pounds (3.6 kg) per person per day". Approximately 90% of all waste produced by Nevadans ends up in landfills. "Wasteful" states Michigan, New Mexico, Wisconsin and Oregon as well as Washington also dominated the list's 5-year period.

Solid waste policy in the United States is aimed at developing and implementing proper mechanisms to effectively manage solid waste. For solid waste policy to be effective, inputs should come from stakeholders, including citizens, businesses, community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, universities, and other research organizations. These inputs form the basis of policy frameworks that influence solid waste management decisions. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates household, industrial, manufacturing, and commercial solid and hazardous wastes under the 1976 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Effective solid waste management is a cooperative effort involving federal, state, regional, and local entities. Thus, the RCRA's Solid Waste program section D encourages the environmental departments of each state to develop comprehensive plans to manage nonhazardous industrial and municipal solid waste.

Waste management in Russia refers to the legislation, actions and processes pertaining to the management of the various waste types encountered throughout the Russian Federation. The basis of legal governance for waste management in Russia at the federal level is outlined through Federal Law No. 89-FZ, which defines waste as “the remains of raw materials, materials, semi-finished products, other articles or products that have been formed in the process of production or consumption as well as the goods (products) that have lost their consumer properties”.

It is estimated that 290 million tonnes of waste was produced in the United Kingdom in 2008 but volumes are declining. In 2012 municipal solid waste generation was almost 30 million tonnes, according to Waste Atlas Platform.

Statistical data shows that waste management in Winnipeg during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Turkey generates about 30 million tons of solid municipal waste per year; the annual amount of waste generated per capita amounts to about 400 kilograms. According to Waste Atlas, Turkey's waste collection coverage rate is 77%, whereas its unsound waste disposal rate is 69%. While the country has a strong legal framework in terms of laying down common provisions for waste management, the implementation process has been considered slow since the beginning of 1990s.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Recycling in Malaysia</span>

Data from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) collected from January to November throughout 2018 puts the national recycling rate at 0.06%, or about 1,800 tonnes of the 3 million tonnes of waste collected in the period. Majority of the waste were sent to landfills.
