White Sun or Seto Surya is a 2016 drama war biographical film directed by Deepak Rauniyar. Written by Deepak Rauniyar, David Barker and Produced by Joslyn Barnes, Danny Glover, Tsering Rhitar Sherpa, and Deepak Rauniyar, under the banner of Aadi Productions with Louverture Films, The Bertha Foundation, Doha Film Institute, The Film Kitchen, Hubert Bals Fund, Mila Productions, Netherlands Fund for Film and Worley Works. The film stars Dayahang Rai and Rabindra Singh Baniya in the lead roles alongside Asha Magrati, Sumi Malla, Amrit Pariyar, Deepak Chetri and Deshbhakta Khanal. The film is based on Nepalese Civil War's conflict between royalists and Maoists. [1]

It world premiered in the Horizons section at the 73rd edition of the Venice Film Festival. [2] It was later screened at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. [3] It was selected as the Nepali entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. [4]

Plot

When his father dies, anti-regime partisan Chandra must travel to his remote mountain village after nearly a decade away. Little Pooja is anxiously awaiting the man she thinks is her father, but she's confused when Chandra arrives with Badri, a young street orphan rumored to be his son. Chandra must face his brother Suraj, who was on the opposing side during the Nepali civil war. The two brothers cannot put aside political feelings while carrying their father's body down the steep mountain path to the river for cremation. Suraj storms off in a rage, leaving Chandra with no other men strong enough to help. Under pressure from the village elders, Chandra must seek help from outside the village to obey the rigid caste and discriminatory gender traditions he fought to eliminate during the war. Chandra searches for a solution in neighboring villages, among the police, guests at a local wedding, and rebel guerrillas...

Deepak Rauniyar is a Nepalese director, writer and producer. He is one of the few internationally acclaimed cinema directors from Nepal. He rose to prominence in 2012 as the director of Highway, the first Nepali movie to be screened at a major international festival – the Berlin International Film Festival. His second international release, White Sun (2016), was named Best Asian Feature Film at the Singapore International Film Festival and resulted in his being named in The New York Times as one of "The 9 New Directors You Need to Watch".

"Melancholy" is an environmentally-themed song sung by 365 Nepali artists. This song was intended to promote an environmental message by breaking the Guinness World Records for "Most Vocal Solos in a Song Recording", which it successfully did. It was written, music composed and directed by environmentalist Nipesh Dhaka. The song was recorded as a single on 19 May 2016. The recording sessions were inaugurated by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli at 8 am and continued until 6 pm. The song was released on 2 September 2017 by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at Army Officer's Club, Kathmandu.

Dayahang Rai is a Nepali actor who made his debut in the 2009 romantic comedy film Mero Euta Saathi Chha. The same year, Rai appeared in the mystery Dasdhunga, in which he portrays the suspected killer of Madan Bhandari, leader of the Communist Party of Nepal; this performance garnered the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2012, his breakthrough role came in Loot, in which he starred as Gofle, who with his four friends sets out to rob a bank in Kathmandu. Uma is a 2013 Nepali drama film directed by Tsering Rhitar Sherpa. It stars Reecha Sharma, Saugat Malla, Mithila Sharma in the lead roles, alongside Dayahang Rai and Nischal Basnet. The film is about the Nepalese Civil War.
