Windy City Live (WCL) is a local daytime talk show that is broadcast on WLS-TV and based in Chicago, Illinois. It premiered on May 26, 2011 as a replacement of The Oprah Winfrey Show which retired that month and is produced by WLS-TV (ABC 7 Chicago). The talk show is filmed in front of a live audience weekdays at the ABC7 Studios in the Chicago Loop on State Street. [2] Current and original hosts are Val Warner and Ryan Chiaverini.

In November 2019, Windy City Live aired its 2,000th live episode with multiple special guests and performances. [3] Windy City Live maintains strong viewership ratings, and has been nominated for and won numerous Chicago Emmy awards. [4]

On July 21, 2021, WLS-TV cancelled Windy City Live. Production was ceased on September 3, 2021. [5] The show morphed into 'Windy City Weekend' a half-hour, weekly addition to ABC7 Eyewitness News at 11am, airing Fridays at 11:30am.

Concept

Windy City Live combines talk, entertainment, celebrity guest appearances, localized Chicago interests, and more in a 60-minute show. [6] Original co-hosts Val Warner and Ryan Chiaverini are joined by guest contributors Roe Conn, an American talk radio host, and television producer Hank Mendheim. [7] Ji Suk Yi had also served as a contributor and later co-host of the show until her departure for the Chicago Sun-Times in 2018. [8]

In July 2018, Bonnie Hunt, former host of The Bonnie Hunt Show , co-hosted WCL with Chiaverini while Warner was away on vacation. [9]

Through the years, celebrity and special guest visits on Windy City Live have included: Anthony Anderson, Chance The Rapper, Dan Abrams, David Muir, Diane Sawyer, Tory Burch, Jenifer Lewis, Valerie Jarrett, LaVar Ball, Masi Oka, G Eazy, Rick Bayless, Garry McCarthy, Shea Couleé, Sinbad, Nick Cannon, Jay Pharoah, Brett Eldredge, Kevin Hart, Mr. T, Michael Pfleger, Carla Hall, Chris Redd, Rahm Emanuel, Pat Quinn, Jennifer Hudson, Brian Urlacher, Martha Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, Rosie O'Donnell, Martha Wash, and more. On November 13, 2018, Michelle Obama previewed her newest book, Becoming , in an interview with Warner on the show. [12] The Chicago interview took place the same day her national book tour kicked off at the United Center with Oprah.

Production

The show is filmed in front of a live audience weekdays at 1 p.m. CDT based at ABC7 Studios in downtown Chicago. The running time is between 40–45 minutes per episode. Tickets to participate in the live audience are free of charge and available online first-come, first-served. Matt Knutson has been the executive producer since 2015. [13]

The Windy City Live set was once home of The Oprah Winfrey Show until 1988, before it moved to Harpo Studios in West Loop, Chicago. [14] Following the end of Oprah in 2011, Windy City Live initially replaced the 9 a.m. CDT time slot in Chicago on WLS-TV.

Reception

Windy City Live is currently in its tenth season. Early ratings peaked at viewership of over 105,000 Chicago households per episode. [15] In recent years, viewership has remained steady with strong ratings among women 25 to 54.

The talk show's social media presence remains strong with over 344,000 Facebook and 38,000 Twitter followers. [16] [17] Its YouTube channel has nearly 32,000 subscribers with videos highlighting Chicago food, celebrity impressions, and highlights from daily episodes.

In 2016, Windy City Live won a Chicago/Midwest Emmy in the program category of best interview/discussion. The following year, Ryan Chiaverini won a Chicago/Midwest Emmy award for best Program Host/Moderator in his role on the series. [18] It is the talk show's fifth Emmy award overall.

John Records Landecker is an American Top40/oldies disc jockey best known for his trademark saying "Records truly is my middle name" and creating Boogie Check, Americana Panorama, and satirical songs and bits based on current events such as "Make a Date with the Watergate", and "Press My Conference". He originally retired from radio broadcasting on July 31, 2015. Boogie Check was a humorous feature; it was the last thing Landecker did each night on his show for about two minutes. A string of brief telephone calls was put on the air in rapid succession. From July 2007 through June 2012, he was host of "Into the Seventies", a syndicated weekend radio program from TKO Radio Networks.

Linda Yu is a Chinese-American former news anchor and author. Yu is best known as co-anchor on the Eyewitness newscast for WLS-TV in Chicago, Illinois from April 1984 until November 2016. Yu became Chicago's first Asian–American broadcast journalist when she began her news career in Chicago at WMAQ-TV in 1979. For her broadcasting work, Yu has received a total of five local Emmy Awards including one for her report examining the aftermath of 9/11 in 2001. In 1984, Yu was honored with a National Gold Medal from the National Conference of Community and Justice for her documentary, "The Scars of Belfast".

Sylvia E. Perez is an American news anchor. Based in Chicago, Perez currently anchors the weekday editions and special segments of Good Day Chicago on WFLD-TV since October 2016. From 1989 until 2013, Perez co–anchored the 11AM newscast on Chicago's WLS-TV alongside Linda Yu. Perez was also the station's "Healthbeat" reporter covering daily health and medical investigative stories for the 4PM and 10PM newscasts.

Ryan Chiaverini is a Chicago/Midwest Emmy Award-winning television personality, actor, musician, and the co-host of Windy City Weekend, formerly Windy City Live on ABC7 Chicago (WLS-TV) alongside Val Warner. The show initially replaced the "Oprah" time slot in Chicago on WLS-TV. The working title was originally "Morning Rush." Chiaverini is credited with naming the show Windy City LIVE. For more than a decade, it has been Chicago's premier talk show winning multiple Midwest Emmys and other accolades. The show format relies heavily on the chemistry between Ryan and Val and guests include some of Hollywood's biggest actors, musicians, TV celebrities, along with local entrepreneurs, restaurateurs, and political figures. Ryan has interviewed countless celebrities including Oscar winners Al Pacino, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lawrence, Octavia Spencer, Emma Stone as well as Grammy Winners Ed Sheeran, Garth Brooks, The Jackson 5, and Chaka Khan. Ryan's Emmy nominated "2 Minute Warning" segment has become a fan favorite and wildly popular with the audience. He writes and produces a series of rapid fire questions prompting spontaneous and fun responses from A-list stars. Featured guests include Kevin Hart, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Larry King, Mike Tyson, Will Ferrell, Chance The Rapper, The Jonas Brothers, Diane Sawyer, Susan Lucci, Snoop Dogg etc.

NewsNation Prime is an American television news program on NewsNation, which premiered nationally on September 1, 2020. Broadcast live from Chicago, the program utilizes the journalistic resources of the 110 television news operations throughout the United States that are operated under the network's corporate parent Nexstar Media Group. The program is designed as an alternative to the opinion-based programs on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News Channel, the top-rated cable news networks in the country in the early 2020s.
