The 1884 Texas gubernatorial election was held to elect the Governor of Texas. John Ireland was re-elected over former U.S. Representative George Washington "Wash" Jones, an independent with Greenback support, and Republican newspaper publisher Anthony Banning Norton.

The Republican Party of Texas (RPT) is the affiliate of the United States Republican Party in the state of Texas. It is currently chaired by Matt Rinaldi, succeeding Allen West who resigned prior to the expiration of his term to run for governor of Texas. The party is headquartered in Austin. The RPT is legally considered to be a political action committee. It is currently the state's favored party, controlling the majority of Texas's U.S. House seats, both U.S. Senate seats, both houses of the state legislature, and the governorship.

In addition, all 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives and 34 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate will be contested to determine the membership of the 119th United States Congress. Thirteen state and territorial governorships and numerous other state and local elections will also be contested.
Anthony Banning Norton was an American journalist, historian and state politician. He was the publisher of newspapers in Ohio and Texas, and a Know Nothing member of the Texas House of Representatives. He later served as the postmaster of Dallas, Texas, and a United States Marshal for North Texas. He was the author of three books.
The 2021 United States elections were held in large part on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. This off-year election included the regular gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia. In addition, state legislative elections were held for the New Jersey Legislature and Virginia House of Delegates, along with numerous state legislative special elections, citizen initiatives, mayoral races, and a variety of other local elections. The 2022 Texas gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the governor of Texas. Incumbent Republican governor Greg Abbott won re-election to a third term, defeating Democratic nominee and former Congressman, Beto O'Rourke. All statewide elected offices are currently held by Republicans. In his previous gubernatorial race in 2018, Abbott won with 54.8% of the vote.
Stillwell Heady Russell (1846-1914), commonly known as Stillwell H. Russell or S. H. Russell, was a lawyer, politician, U.S. marshal, member of the Texas Congress, a soldier in the Confederate Army, and, at the time of his death, justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court (OSC). Born in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas, he moved to what would become the state of Oklahoma after 1870 and before 1910. Although he lived a relatively full and adventurous life, his career on the OSC was cut short by illness. Re-elected to this high position in the fall of 1914, he died before the end of the calendar year and the beginning of his second term.

The election coincided with various other federal and state elections, including for Governor of Nevada. Primary elections were held on June 14. Nevada is one of 21 states that elects its lieutenant governor separately from its governor.

Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20, 2023. These will be the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census.
