The 2011 South Dakota Coyotes football team represented the University of South Dakota in the 2011 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Coyotes were led by eighth year head coach Ed Meierkort, played their home games at the DakotaDome, and they were members of the Great West Conference. This was South Dakota's final year as a member of the Great West as they became a member of The Summit League in 2012 and a football-only member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference

The Great West Conference (GWC) was an NCAA college athletic conference in the continental United States. Originally a football-only league, it became an all-sports entity during the 2008–09 season. The GWC stopped sponsoring football following the 2011 season. The conference became defunct when four of the remaining five full member schools became members of other conferences on July 1, 2013.

Joseph Cassidy Glenn is a former American football coach and former player. He was the head football coach at the University of South Dakota, his alma mater, from 2012 to 2015. He was named head coach on December 5, 2011, after the school's athletic director, David Sayler, fired Ed Meierkort. Glenn served as the head football coach at Doane College (1976–1979), the University of Northern Colorado (1989–1999), the University of Montana (2000–2002), and the University of Wyoming (2003–2008). He won two NCAA Division II Football Championships at Northern Colorado, in 1996 and 1997, and an NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship at Montana in 2001.

The South Dakota Coyotes, also known as the USD Coyotes, are the athletic teams for the University of South Dakota. Their team colors are vermilion and white. They have been members of Summit League of the NCAA's Division I since the 2011–12 school year. The football team plays in Division I's Football Championship Subdivision as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Coyotes were charter members of the Division II North Central Conference and were members until 2008 when it upgraded to Division I.

They are led by head coach Eric Peterson and play their home games at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Prior to joining Division I beginning with the 2008–09 season, the Coyotes were members of NCAA Division II in the North Central Conference. They were Division II National Champions in 1958.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tyler Cain</span>

Tyler Cain is an American basketball player who last played for Derthona Basket of the Italian Lega Basket Serie A (LBA). He played college basketball for the University of South Dakota (USD). He is best known for being the inaugural winner of the Great West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year award in 2009–10, the conference's first as a Division I basketball league. As a senior that season, Cain became the second player in USD history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. He is also USD's all-time leading shot blocker after compiling 361 during his career.

The 2011 Great West Conference men's basketball tournament took place March 10–12, 2011 in Orem, Utah. According to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations, as a new Division I conference the Great West champion does not receive an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament until 2020. However, 2011 champion North Dakota received an automatic bid to the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Tournament. In the 2010 tournament the South Dakota Coyotes defeated the Houston Baptist Huskies to claim their first basketball tournament championship.

The 2011 Air Force Falcons football team represented the United States Air Force Academy in the 2011 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Falcons were led by fifth-year head coach Troy Calhoun and played their home games at Falcon Stadium. They are members of the Mountain West Conference. They finished the season 7–6, 3–4 in Mountain West play to finish in fifth place. They were invited to the Military Bowl where they were defeated by Toledo, 42–41. With wins over Army and Navy, Air Force won the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy for the second consecutive year.

The Sitting Bull Trophy is the name of the rivalry trophy that was awarded to the winner of the annual football game between the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks and the University of South Dakota Coyotes. The rivalry stems from the time the two teams spent competing together in the North Central Conference (1922–2007) and later in the Great West Conference (2008–2011).

The 2017 South Dakota Coyotes football team represented the University of South Dakota in the 2017 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by second-year head coach Bob Nielson and played their home games in the DakotaDome. They were a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. They finished the season 8–5, 4–4 in MVFC play to finish in a three-way tie for fifth place. They received an at-large bid to the FCS Playoffs, which was the schools first ever FCS Playoff bid, where they defeated Nicholls State in the first round before losing to Sam Houston State in the second round.

The 1979 South Dakota Coyotes football team represented the University of South Dakotaas a member of the North Central Conference (NCC) during the 1979 NCAA Division II football season. Led by first-year head coach Dave Triplett, the Coyotes compiled an overall record of 5–6 with a mark of 3–3 in conference play, tying for fourth place in the NCC. South Dakota and South Dakota State played two head-to-head games, both won by the Jackrabbits, which counted as one loss for South Dakota and one win for South Dakota State in the conference standings.
