The 2013 San Martin Jilotepeque bus disaster occurred in San Martin Jilotepeque, Guatemala on Monday September 9, 2013, at 7:50 local time. [1] A passenger bus from Transportes Sanmartineca carrying more than 80 passengers crashed into a 200-meter ravine after missing a sharp bend in the road connecting San Martin Jilotepeque to Chimaltenango. 48 people died and another 37 were wounded in the accident. The 2012 Guatemala earthquake occurred on November 7 at 10:35:45 local time. The shock had a moment magnitude of 7.4 and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of VII. The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, 35 kilometres (22 mi) south of Champerico in the department of Retalhuleu. The affected region is earthquake-prone, where the Cocos Plate is being subducted along the Middle America Trench beneath the North American and the Caribbean Plates, near their triple junction.

The 2008 Villa Canales bus disaster occurred in the municipality of Villa Canales, Guatemala on 29 February 2008, at 19:15 local time. A passenger bus from Transportes Cubanita, with 79 people on board, crashed into a 10-meter ravine after missing a sharp bend in the road connecting Villa Canales to Barberena. 54 people died and another 25 were wounded in the accident.
