State Peace and Development Council former military government of Myanmar

The State Peace and Development Council was the official name of the military government of Burma, which seized power under the rule of Saw Maung in 1988. On 30 March 2011, Senior General and Council Chairman Than Shwe signed a decree that officially dissolved the Council.

Tin Aung Myint Oo General and Vice President of Burma

ThihathuraTin Aung Myint Oo is a Burmese former military official and politician who served as 1st First Vice Presidents of Myanmar from 30 March 2011 to 1 July 2012. He is also chairman of Burmese Trade Council, having been appointed in November 2007 by Than Shwe, in response to Saffron Revolution demonstrations in October of that year, and Minister of Military Affairs. He joined the Buddhist monkhood on 3 May, after speculation over his disappearance had circulated throughout new media.

Kyaw Thu actor and director

Kyaw Thu is a two-time Myanmar Academy Award winning film actor and film director. One of the top leading men of Burmese cinema in the 1980s and 1990s, Kyaw Thu has starred in over 200 films and has directed several successful films. Since the early 2000s, Kyaw Thu has devoted much time to do social work for the poor, and in the process has gradually emerged as a vocal critic of the Burmese military government.

Phakant Town in Kachin State, Myanmar

Phakant is a town in Phakant Township, Kachin State of the northernmost part of Myanmar (Burma). It is located on the Uyu River 350 km north of Mandalay in the middle of one of the world's most inhospitable and malaria infested jungles, cut off for several months a year during the monsoons. It is famous for its jade mines which produce the world's best quality jadeite.

Myint Swe is a Burmese politician, currently serving as 3rd First Vice President of the Republic of Union of Myanmar (Burma). He previously served as Acting President of Myanmar after the resignation of President Htin Kyaw on 21 March 2018. He also served as Chief Minister of Yangon Region from 30 March 2011 to 30 March 2016. On 30 March 2016, he was sworn in as the Vice President of Myanmar. He is an ethnic Mon ex-military officer in Myanmar Army with the rank of Lieutenant general.

Win Myint 10th President of Myanmar

Win Myint is a Burmese politician and former political prisoner who is serving as the 10th President of Myanmar since 30 March 2018. He was the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Myanmar from 2016 to 2018. He also served as a member of parliament for House of Representatives from 2012 to 2018. Win Myint is seen as an important ally and placeholder for State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who is the actual head of government in Myanmar but is constitutionally barred from the presidency.

The jade trade in Myanmar consists of the mining, distribution, and manufacture of the variety of jade, called jadeite, which is produced in the nation of Myanmar (Burma). Most of the jadeite mined in Myanmar is not cut for use in the country, instead being transported to other nations, primarily in Asia, for use in jewelry and other products. The jadeite deposits found in Myanmar's northern regions is the highest quality jadeite in the world, considered precious by sources in China going as far back as the 10th century. Today, it is estimated that Myanmar is the origin of upwards of 70 percent of the world's supply of high-quality jadeite.

2015 Hpakant jade mine disaster

On 21 November 2015, a major landslide in Hpakant, Kachin State, northern Myanmar killed at least 116 people near a jade mine, with around 100 more missing.

Events of 2019 in Myanmar

On April 22, 2019, a landslide triggered the collapse of a jade mine near Maw Wun Kalay, Hpakant, Kachin State, Myanmar, trapping at least 54 miners. The deaths of four miners were confirmed, along with the later deaths of two rescue workers.

2020 Hpakant jade mine disaster Landslide in Myanmar

The Hpakant jade mine disaster was a mining disaster in which a landslide killed at least 174 miners, at least 100 went missing, and 54 people were injured in a jade mining site in the Hpakant area of Kachin State in Myanmar. The disaster took place on 2 July 2020 and is the deadliest mining accident to date in Myanmar.
