It was the 72nd edition of the event for the men and the 10th edition for the women.

It was the 12th edition of the tournament which was part of the 2021 WTA Tour, and of the 250 series of tournaments. It took place in Prague, Czech Republic between 12 and 18 July 2021. This was the first edition of the tournament held on outdoor hard courts, as opposed to clay courts in previous editions.
The 2021 Astana Open was a tennis tournament organized for professional tennis players, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, in 2021 on indoor hard courts. It was primarily organized due to the cancellation of many tournaments during the 2021 ATP Tour and 2021 WTA Tour, because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It is the second edition of the tournament for the men and the first for the women. The tournament took place in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, from 20–26 September for the men, and from 27 September to 2 October for the women.

Iga Świątek defeated Naomi Osaka in the final, 6–4, 6–0 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 Miami Open. She became the fourth woman in history to complete the Sunshine Double in singles, having won Indian Wells two weeks earlier. It was Świątek's first Miami Open title, her third consecutive WTA 1000 title, and her fourth WTA 1000-level title overall. Świątek became the first woman in history to win the first three WTA 1000 titles of the year in succession, the first player since Serena Williams in 2013 to win three consecutive WTA 1000 titles, and extended her winning streak to 17 matches. She lost no sets and just 26 games en route to the title, the fewest since Martina Hingis dropped 21 games in 2000.

Nao Hibino and Oksana Kalashnikova defeated Quinn Gleason and Elixane Lechemia in the final, 6–7(7–9), 7–5, [10–3] to win the doubles tennis title at the 2023 Prague Open. It was the second time that Hibino won the singles and doubles titles at the same WTA Tour tournament, following the 2019 Japan Women's Open.
