In June 2023, large forest fires broke out in the northeastern regions of Kazakhstan experienced its greatest annual death toll. While putting out the fires, at least 15 people died. [1] [2] [3]

Background

Lightning ignited the fires. A total of 60,000 hectares of land were lost. Residents of several villages were evacuated [4] [5]

Response

On 10 June 2023, more than 1,000 emergency personnel battled an out-of-control fire. Yuri Ilyin, the Minister of Emergency Situations, was fired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev earlier that day. The condolences of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and other leaders have been extended to Tokayev. [4] [6] [7]

Aftermath

The day of national mourning, 12 June, was established by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in memory of the forest workers who perished while battling wildfires in Kazakhstan's eastern Abai Region. [8] The investigation is yet to be concluded; former Minister of Emergency Situations Yuri Ilyin, Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Zülfia Süleimenova, Äkim of Abai Region Nūrlan Ūranhaev and former Äkim of East Kazakhstan Region Daniyal Ahmetov are to be questioned regarding the wildfire [9]

Prior to that, Mukhamejanov was the ambassador to Lithuania and Latvia, äkim of Mangystau Region from 22 December 2011 to 18 January 2013, Minister of Internal Affairs from 14 October 2005 to 2 April 2009, Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan from 29 January 2002 to 13 June 2003, and Minister of Justice from 13 October 1997 to 13 September 2000.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Kazakhstan was a part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached Kazakhstan on 13 March 2020 after two Kazakh citizens in Almaty returned from Germany. That same day, two more cases were confirmed, with one female arriving from Italy in Astana and the other from Germany in Almaty as well. Following the outbreak, on 15 March 2020, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared a state of emergency that was set to last until 15 April 2020. However, measures were prolonged in order to curb the transmission of the virus, leading to many notable holidays such as Nowruz and the Victory Day being cancelled. On 19 March 2020, a strict quarantine was placed on the cities of Astana and Almaty, where the most cases were occurring. On 30 March 2020, Atyrau and five cities in Karaganda Region went under a lockdown.

As a result of the conflict, 11 people died, 185 were injured and 47 persons were arrested. It provoked damages costing around KZ₸1.7 billion and the displacement of around 20,000 people to neighboring Kyrgyzstan.

Abai Region is a region of Kazakhstan. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced on 16 March 2022 that the region would be created. The area split off from East Kazakhstan Region when Tokayev's bill came into force on 8 June 2022. The administrative center of the region is Semey. Its borders roughly correspond to the old Semipalatinsk Region which was liquidated in 1997 and merged with East Kazakhstan Region.

The region's borders roughly correspond to the western half of the old Jezkazgan Region which was liquidated in 1997 and merged with Karaganda Region.

Following the 2023 Kazakh legislative election, a process of government formation took place in Kazakhstan as incumbent prime minister Älihan Smaiylov alongside his cabinet resigned from the position on 29 March 2023 to serve briefly as acting minister before a new government was appointed.
