The 2023 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa oil and gas company attack occurred on November 7, 2023, when heavily armed militants attacked the Alhaj Oil and Gas Company in the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Background

The attack occurred shortly after a prior incident in the same province, where a Pakistan Army officer and three soldiers were killed during an intense exchange of fire with militants in the Tirah area. [1]

Attack

Heavily armed militants targeted the Alhaj Oil and Gas Company, situated in the Dera Ismail Khan district, which borders the South Waziristan tribal district. The attack took place late on Tuesday night and led to a violent shootout. Two policemen lost their lives during the attack, while three others sustained injuries. [1] [5]

Response

In the aftermath of the attack, police contingents promptly arrived at the scene. A combing operation was launched in the area to capture the fleeing attackers. The injured victims were admitted to the district's Combined Military Hospital. [1] [4]

Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad is a codename of a combined military operation by the Pakistani military in support of local law enforcement agencies to disarm and eliminate the terrorist sleeper cells across all states of Pakistan, started on 22 February 2017. The operation is aimed to eliminate the threat of terrorism, and consolidating the gains of Operation Zarb-e-Azb which was launched in 2014 as a joint military offensive. It is further aimed at ensuring the security of Pakistan's borders. The operation is ongoing active participation from Pakistan Army, Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Police and other Warfare and Civil Armed Forces managed under the Government of Pakistan. More than 375,000 operations have been carried out against terrorists so far. This Operation has been mostly acknowledged after Operation Zarb e Azb.

On 29 July 2013, terrorists attacked on Dera Ismail Khan's central prison and freed more than 240 criminals including 35 high-profile terrorists. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility of attack.

January 2009 Dera Ismail Khan bombings involved two incidents in Dera Ismail Khan. The first occurred on 4 January in front of Polytechnic College, killing ten people, including four policemen and two journalists, and injuring 28. The other occurred when a bomb planted on motorcycle exploded on 26 January near town hall, killing 6 people and injuring 24.

On May 18, 2010, a bombing took place in Kachi Paind Khan area of Dera Ismail Khan. The bomb was planted on a motorcycle and killed 13 people while injured 14 on its detonation. Deputy superintendent of Kulachi police, Muhammad Iqbal Khan was also among the deceased and was said to be the target of attack.

On 25 June 2011, 12 militants of Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacked a police station in Kulachi, Dera Ismail Khan. In response police defended building and a conflict started between police and terrorists which lasted for five hours. 10 policemen were killed while three were injured. Five terrorists were killed and others managed to escape. The spokesman of TTP Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility and said that the attack was carried in retaliation against Osama's killing and government's attacks against terrorists.

On 22 July 2018, 3 days before general elections, a suicide bomber blew himself near the vehicle of former KPK provincial minister of Agriculture Ikramullah Khan Gandapur in Kulachi, Dera Ismail Khan District, Pakistan. The prime target of attack, Gandapur was brought to Dera Ismail Khan in critical condition where he succumbed to his wounds. Apart from Gandapur, his driver and one of his guards was also killed and three more people were injured. Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the assault describing Gandapur's killing of their colleague militants as the motive. The attack was widely condemned across Pakistan.

On 3 November 2023, a Pakistan Army convoy was attacked in Gwadar District, Balochistan, Pakistan, resulting in the death of 14 soldiers when two vehicles of the security forces were ambushed by militants while moving from Pasni to Ormara.

The 2023 Tirah shooting happened on 6 November 2023, in the Khyber District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Hassan Haider and three other soldiers were killed during an exchange of fire with militants. The security forces conducted an operation in the area, resulting in the death of three militants.
