Alice Baker is a set decorator best known for her work on the film 12 Years a Slave . With production designer Adam Stockhausen, Baker was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Production Design for her work on the period drama. [1]

Career

12 Years a Slave

Baker served as set decorator on the film 12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen's 2013 adaptation of Solomon Northup's 1853 memoir. As the historical drama was shot in New Orleans, but took place in Saratoga Springs, New York and on a ship as well as in Louisiana, Baker and Stockhausen used stereoscopic images and other historical documents to guide their development of sets that resembled the Northeast and steamships in the 1830s, in addition to using Louisiana plantations with some original buildings still in place. [2] Faced with a limited budget as well as recently released films dealing with the same historical era that had just used many of the available sets (for example, Django Unchained and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ), Baker and Stockenhausen were challenged to develop an aesthetic authentic to the period, but visually distinct from the other films. [3] They collected original items from antique shops, museums, and personal homes, in Mississippi and Louisiana, to decorate the sets. [4]

In addition to the Academy Award nomination, Baker and Stockhausen were also nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Production Design, [5] a Critics' Choice Movie Award Best Art Direction, [6] and the Art Directors Guild Award for Excellence in Production Design for a Period Film, [7] among other awards.

I Saw the Light

Baker also served as set decorator on the 2015 Hank Williams biopic, I Saw the Light, starring Tom Hiddleston. Shot in Shreveport, Louisiana, Baker worked with production designer Merideth Boswell and another limited budget that nevertheless used 62 different locations to recreate the environment of Williams's life and career. Donald Graham Burt is a film production designer. He has worked on multiple films including The Joy Luck Club, Dangerous Minds, and Donnie Brasco, as well as with David Fincher on Zodiac in 2007. In 2008, he designed the sets for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button which won an Academy Award for Best Art Direction in 2009, an Art Directors Guild Award for Best Achievement in Art Direction, and a BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design, along with a nomination for a Satellite Award for Best Art Direction & Production Design.

The Great Gatsby is a 2013 romantic drama film based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel of the same name. The film was co-written and directed by Baz Luhrmann and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the eponymous Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Elizabeth Debicki and Jack Thompson. Jay-Z served as executive producer. Production began in 2011 and took place in Australia, with a $105 million net production budget. The film follows the life and times of millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) and his neighbor Nick Carraway (Maguire), who recounts his encounter with Gatsby at the height of the Roaring Twenties on Long Island.

Victor J. Zolfo is a set decorator who has worked in the film industry since the late 1980s. Zolfo won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and the BAFTA Award for Best Production Design for the 2008 film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, sharing the awards for the film with art director and production designer Donald Graham Burt. He was also part of the 20-person team who won the Art Directors Guild's Excellence in Production Design Award for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Nathan Crowley is an English production designer and a former art director, who is best known for his work with Christopher Nolan. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Production Design for The Prestige (2006), The Dark Knight (2008), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017), and First Man (2018). For The Prestige, he was nominated with set decorator Julie Ochipinti, for The Dark Knight, he was nominated with set decorator Peter Lando, and for Interstellar and Dunkirk, he was nominated with set decorator Gary Fettis. Crowley was also nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Production Design for Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008).

67th British Academy Film Awards

The 67th British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as the BAFTAs, were held on 16 February 2014 at the Royal Opera House in London, honouring the best national and foreign films of 2013. The nominations were announced on 8 January 2014 by actor Luke Evans and actress Helen McCrory. Presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, accolades were handed out for the best feature-length film and documentaries of any nationality that were screened at British cinemas in 2013.

Adam Stockhausen is an American production designer. Stockhausen, along with set decorator Anna Pinnock won the Academy Award for Best Production Design for the 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel. Previously he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Production Design for the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave together with set decorator Alice Baker. He was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Production Design for the 2015 film Bridge of Spies along with set decorators Bernhard Henrich and Rena DeAngelo.

Beverley Dunn is an Australian set decorator.

The 18th Art Directors Guild Awards, which were given on February 8, 2014, honored the best production designers of 2013.

Jeff A. Melvin is a Canadian set decorator. Best known for his work on the 2017 film, The Shape of Water, for which he won Academy Award for Best Production Design, with production designer Paul Denham Austerberry, and set decorator, Shane Vieau. The trio also won the BAFTA award for Production Design on February 18.
