  1. Oakland schools superintendent Tony Smith resigned suddenly in April 2013 after four years leading the district, citing family health issues. [14]
  2. The Oakland school district approved its first charter school in 1993. [17] About 25 percent of Oakland's public school students attend city charter schools, [18] while another 25 percent attend a school outside the city. [19]
