The Bauchi State House of Assembly is the legislative arm of the government of Bauchi State in Nigeria. [1] It is a unicameral legislature having 31 members elected from the 20 local government areas in the state known as state constituencies. Local government areas with considerably larger populations are delineated into two constituencies to give equal representation. This makes the number of legislators in the Bauchi State House of Assembly 31. [2]

The fundamental functions of the assembly are to enact new laws, amend or repeal existing laws and oversight of the executive. [3] Members of the assembly are elected for a term of four years concurrent with federal legislators (Senate and House of Representatives). The state assembly convenes three times a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) in the assembly complex within the state capital, Bauchi.

The leaders of Bauchi State House of Assembly are Abubakar Y. Suleiman (speaker) and Danlami Kawule (deputy speaker). [4]

Abubakar Y Suleiman is a Nigerian politician who was elected speaker of the 9th Bauchi State House of Assembly in 2019. Suleiman, a member of the APC representing — Ningi State constituency was controversially elected speaker of the house by 11 of the 31 members of the assembly. Of the 11 members that elected Suleiman speaker, 8 were members of the People's Democratic Party while 3 were renegade members of the majority All Progressives Congress. Eighteen member of the majority party (APC) in the house were denied access to the assembly complex during the Election. This group conducted its own election in a different location and produced the former speaker of the 8th assembly Kawuwa Damina who was running for re-election for the 9th assembly speaker. The crisis was later resolved.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

The 2023 Bauchi State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Bauchi State, concurrent with elections to the Bauchi State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Bala Mohammed initially declined to run for re-election, instead running for president. However, after losing the PDP presidential primary in May 2022, Mohammed was renominated in a rerun primary. Mohammed was re-elected as governor by a 9% margin over first runner-up and APC nominee — former Chief of the Air Staff Sadique Abubakar.

The 2023 Nigerian House of Representatives elections were held on 25 February 2023 where voters elected members of the House of Representatives using first-past-the-post voting in all 360 federal constituencies. The last regular House elections for all districts were in 2019.
