The Villa de Pitanxo was a Spanish fishing trawler that sank off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, on February 15, 2022. Twenty-one people died in the sinking. [1]
At approximately 2:30 am, on February 15, 2022, the Villa de Pitanxo's emergency beacon was activated, initiating a search and rescue effort by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Halifax. [2] [3] [4] [5]
CCGS Cape Roger is the lead ship of the Cape Roger-class fisheries patrol vessels operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The ship entered service in 1977 and was assigned to monitor the Atlantic fisheries. During the Turbot War, Cape Roger took part in the detainment of the Spanish fishing trawler Estai. The ship is currently in service.
CCGS Cygnus is a Cape Roger-class fisheries patrol vessel of the Canadian Coast Guard. The ship entered service in 1981 and is used to monitor the fisheries along the Atlantic coast of Canada. During the Turbot War, Cygnus was among the Coast Guard vessels sent to monitor the European fishing fleet on the Grand Banks.
The FV Monte Galineiro was a Spanish fishing vessel that sank 400 km (250 mi) off the coast of Newfoundland on February 22, 2009.
In September 2014, it was announced by the International Organization for Migration that a ship sank off the Malta coast on September 11, 2014, killing around 500 migrants. There were eleven survivors. The ship left Damietta, Egypt, on September 6 and sank five days later on September 11. Two Palestinian survivors of the wreck accuse the traffickers of intentionally sinking the vessel after the refugees would not agree to transfer to a different ship.
The Russian-flagged fishing trawler Dalniy Vostok sank on 1 April 2015, off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula in the Sea of Okhotsk. Fifty-seven of the ship's 132 crew members were confirmed dead, with rescue operations underway for survivors. The freezer trawler sank 183 nautical miles west of Krutogorovsky, a settlement in Kamchatka's Sobolevsky District.

The Spanish fishing trawler Sonia sank off the Cornish coast of England on 20 October 1984. On 19 October, in Irish territorial waters off the coast of County Wexford, the Sonia had been spotted by the Irish Naval Service patrol vessel Aisling and was suspected to be fishing illegally. The Sonia was ordered to halt and prepare to receive a boarding party, but did not comply.
