History

In 1947, brothers O. P. and W.T. Crowder concluded their initial undertaking, which involved constructing a sidewalk for a church. Within a span of fewer than ten years, they assembled a workforce comprising 40 individuals and embarked on Crowder's inaugural significant endeavor in highway construction – the construction of a bridge located in Charlotte, North Carolina. [2] As the Company grew, O. P. and W.T. moved to larger heavy civil and environmental projects including water and wastewater treatment plants. Crowder expanded its operations in the early 1990s to include mechanical and industrial projects. [2] Crowder opened offices in Apex, North Carolina and Spartanburg, South Carolina, creating two new divisions of operation. [2]

Company executives include Otis Crowder, son of O.P. Crowder, as chief executive officer and Bill Crowder Jr., son of W.T. Crowder, as chief operating officer.

Kernersville is located at the center of the Piedmont Triad metropolitan area, between Greensboro to the east, High Point to the south, and Winston-Salem to the west. Some of the farmland surrounding the town has been sold and turned into large middle-to-upper-class housing developments. The Winston-Salem Northern Beltway, a partial loop running around the city of Winston-Salem, as introduced in 2014, and will eventually go through Kernersville by the late 2020s or early 2030's. The Clinchfield Railroad was an operating and holding company for the Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway. The line ran from the coalfields of Virginia and Elkhorn City, Kentucky, to the textile mills of South Carolina. The 35-mile segment from Dante, Virginia, to Elkhorn City, opening up the coal lands north of Sandy Ridge Mountains and forming a connection with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway at Elkhorn City, was completed in 1915.

Blumenthal Performing Arts is a non-profit, multi-venue performing arts complex located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It opened in 1992 and is named in honor of the people of the state of North Carolina and the Blumenthal Foundation established by I.D. Blumenthal who founded RSC Brands, the largest private donor to the capital campaign. The idea for the center dates back to the late 1970s. Momentum for the project grew in the 1980s resulting in a $15 million allocation from the state of North Carolina, approval of a $15 million bond by the citizens of Charlotte and an additional $32 million contributed by individuals, corporations and foundations. In 1987 the Belk Brothers donated a valuable piece of land as the site of the new theatre complex. Total construction cost for the Blumenthal Center was over $62 million.

The Piedmont & Northern Railway was a heavy electric interurban company operating over two disconnected divisions in North and South Carolina. Tracks spanned 128 miles (206 km) total between the two segments, with the northern division running 24 miles (39 km) from Charlotte, to Gastonia, North Carolina, including a three-mile (5 km) spur to Belmont. The southern division main line ran 89 miles (143 km) from Greenwood to Spartanburg, South Carolina, with a 12 mi (19 km) spur to Anderson. Initially the railroad was electrified at 1500 volts DC, however, much of the electrification was abandoned when dieselisation was completed in 1954.
