Donald Kevin Thorp (born July 10, 1962) is an American former football defensive end who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs.

Thorp was born in Chicago, Illinois and played scholastically at Buffalo Grove High School. [1] He played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini, [2] where, as a senior, he was named a first-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. [3]

Thorp was selected by the Saints in the sixth-round of the 1984 NFL Draft. [4] He appeared in five games for the Saints during the 1984 season, then was out of professional football in 1985 and 1986. He resumed his career as a replacement player with the Colts during the 1987 NFLPA strike. He recorded a sack in each of the three replacement games. He was retained by the Colts after the strike, and appeared in two more games that year. He played in one game for the Colts, and three games for the Chiefs during the 1988 season. [1] [5]

Charles Pierre Thomas Jr. is an American former professional football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini. He was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2007. Thomas developed into an all-around threat as a runner, pass catcher, blocker, and special teams player. He led the Saints in rushing yards in 2008 and 2009 and again in 2013, when he also led all NFL running backs in receiving yards. He became known for his excellence in executing the screen pass; it was a screen pass on which he scored the Saints' first touchdown in their 31–17 win in Super Bowl XLIV, two weeks after he had scored two touchdowns in the Saints' 2009 NFC Championship game victory.

The 1987 San Diego Chargers was the franchise's 18th season in the National Football League (NFL), and the 28th overall. The team improved on their 4–12 record in 1986, finishing 8–7 but missing the playoffs. The strike of 1987 reduced the regular season schedule from sixteen to fifteen games. The Chargers started the season 8–1, with victories over eventual division winners Indianapolis and Cleveland, before collapsing to lose their final six games of the season, narrowly missing the playoffs. All but one of their final six losses came to teams that made the postseason in 1987.
