A Dove Award is an accolade by the Gospel Music Association (GMA) of the United States to recognize outstanding achievement in the Christian music industry. The awards are presented annually. The awards have been held in Nashville, Tennessee every year except 2011 and 2012 when they were held in Atlanta, Georgia. The ceremonies feature live musical performances and are broadcast on TBN.

Sugarland is an American country music duo founded in Atlanta, Georgia. The duo consists of singer-songwriters Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush. They were founded in 2002, at which point Kristen Hall was also a member. All three had experience in folk rock: Nettles had recorded in the groups Soul Miner's Daughter and Jennifer Nettles Band, Bush had recorded two albums as one-half of the duo Billy Pilgrim, and Hall had recorded two solo albums. After Hall left in 2006, Nettles and Bush continued as a duo.

Francesca Battistelli is an American Christian singer and songwriter. She was originally an independent artist and had released an independent album, Just a Breath, in 2004. Her first studio album on Fervent Records, My Paper Heart, was released on July 22, 2008. Her first single, "I'm Letting Go", was released to on june bugs radio stations on July 15, 2008, and charted on national Christian CHR charts. The song was the 16th most played song of 2008 on Christian radio stations according to R&R magazine. Battistelli received her first Grammy Award nomination in 2009, for Best Gospel Performance with her single, "Free to Be Me". "Always" is a song written and recorded by American alternative rock band Switchfoot. It was released with "Mess of Me" as one of two lead singles from their seventh studio album, Hello Hurricane. While "Mess of Me" was worked to modern and mainstream rock formats, "Always" was worked to Christian AC/CHR by the band's CCM distributor, Credential Recordings/EMI CMG. It was also released as a single in Japan, while an accompanying music video was made available there.

The Dove Award for Worship Album of the Year is presented by the Gospel Music Association of the United States. The category was first introduced as Praise and Worship Album of the Year at the 12th GMA Dove Awards in 1981, and since then is presented annually. Worship Album of the Year is presented to the artist and the producer.
