The Embassy of Germany in Kabul was the diplomatic mission of the Federal Republic of Germany in Afghanistan. The Consulate General also operates in Mazar-i-Sharif as a second German mission in the country. The Embassy in Kabul is located in the diplomatic district of the capital on Wazir Akbar Khan, Mena 6 in Kabul. The current Ambassador is Axel Zeidler. [1]

History

In 2013 Germany opened the Consulate General in a former hotel in Mazar-i-Sharif, the second German diplomatic mission other than the embassy. [2]

The devastating bomb attack in Kabul on May 31, 2017, which killed 150 people and injured 400, took place near various embassies, including the German Mission. The embassy buildings were so badly damaged that demolition was considered. The office of the German foreign intelligence service BND at the embassy was also badly damaged. After the attack, all employees from Afghanistan were initially withdrawn, with only one core team continuing to work from NATO headquarters. 30 Bundeswehr soldiers from the German Resolute Support Mission protected the grounds of the embassy until its reopening.[ citation needed ]

Since 15 August 2021 the embassy is closed until further notice.

Mazar-i-Sharif City in Balkh Province, Afghanistan

The ancient city of Balkh is also nearby.

Afghanistan–United States relations Bilateral relations

Relations between Afghanistan and the United States began in 1921 under the leaderships of Amanullah Khan and Warren G. Harding, respectively. The first contact between the two nations occurred further back in the 1830s when the first recorded person from the United States explored Afghanistan. The United States began investing some money in landlocked Afghanistan, which ended before the 1978 Saur Revolution. Beginning in 1980, the United States began admitting thousands of Afghan refugees for resettlement, and provided money and weapons to the Mujahideen through Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Afghanistan–India relations Bilateral relations

Afghanistan–India relations refers to the diplomatic relations between India and Afghanistan. They had been historical neighbours, and share cultural ties through Bollywood and cricket.

The Battles of Mazar-i-Sharif were a part of the Afghan Civil War and took place in 1997 and 1998 between the forces of Abdul Malik Pahlawan and his Hazara allies, Junbish-e Milli-yi Islami-yi Afghanistan, and the Taliban.

2011 Afghanistan Ashura bombings

The 2011 Afghanistan Ashura bombings were a pair of bombings in the Afghan capital of Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif. The Kabul suicide bombing took place at around noon local time, on the day when Muslims commemorate Ashura, an annual holy day throughout the Muslim world particularly by the Shi'a Muslims.

209th Corps (Afghanistan) Military unit

The 209th 'Shaheen' (Falcon) Corps was a corps, or military district, of the Afghan National Army. Its headquarters, Camp Shaheen, was at Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh Province. Beginning on 25 April 2017, it was commanded by Brigadier General Amanullah Mobin.

A group of three suicide attackers rammed a truck bomb into the wall of the German consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan on 10 November 2016. Six people were killed and more than 120 others were injured, while the sole remaining attacker was captured by Afghan security forces. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the bombing was in retaliation for an airstrike in Kunduz that killed 30 civilians the week before.

2016 Bagram Airfield bombing

The 2016 Bagram bombing took place on November 12, 2016, when a suicide bomber managed to penetrate the security layer of Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan located about 45 km north of Kabul, detonating his vest near a group of soldiers who were en route to Modern Army Combatives Training. Four U.S. citizens were killed (2 soldiers and 2 contractors, while at least 17 others were injured, including 16 Americans and 1 Polish citizen. One injured soldier died a month later from complications due to injuries sustained in the blast raising the total killed to 5.

May 2017 Kabul bombing Car bomb explosion in the centre of Afghanistan, killing 100+ people

On 31 May 2017, a truck bomb exploded in a crowded intersection in Kabul, Afghanistan, near the German embassy at about 08:25 local time during rush hour, killing over 150 and injuring 413, mostly civilians, and damaging several buildings in the embassy. The attack was the deadliest terror attack to take place in Kabul. The diplomatic quarter—in which the attack took place—is one of the most heavily fortified areas in the city, with 3-meter-tall (10 ft) blast walls, and access requires passing through several checkpoints. The explosion created a crater about 4.5 m (15 ft) wide and 3–4 m (10–13 ft) deep. Afghanistan's intelligence agency NDS claimed that the blast was planned by the Haqqani Network. Although no group has claimed responsibility, the Afghan Taliban are also a suspect but they have denied involvement and condemned the attack.

The Embassy of Pakistan in Kabul is the diplomatic mission of Pakistan in Afghanistan. Pakistan also operates consulates in the Afghan cities of Herat, Jalalabad, Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif.
