First-magnitude star

First-magnitude stars are the brightest stars in the night sky, with apparent magnitudes lower (i.e. brighter) than +1.50. [1] [2] Hipparchus, in the 1st century BC, introduced the magnitude scale. He allocated the first magnitude to the 20 brightest stars and the sixth magnitude to the faintest stars visible to the naked eye.

In the 19th century, this ancient scale of apparent magnitude was logarithmically defined, so that a star of magnitude 1.00 is exactly 100 times as bright as one of 6.00. The scale was also extended to even brighter celestial bodies such as Sirius (-1.5), Venus (-4), the full Moon (-12.7), and the Sun (-26.7).

Hipparchus

Hipparchus ranked his stars in a very simple way. He listed the brightest stars as "of the first magnitude", which meant "the biggest." Stars less bright Hipparchus called "of the second magnitude", or second biggest. The faintest stars visible to the naked eye he called "of the sixth magnitude". [3]

Naked-eye magnitude system

During a series of lectures given in 1736 at the University of Oxford, its then Professor of Astronomy explainedː [4]

The fixed Stars appear to be of different bignesses, not because they really are so, but because they are not all equally distant from us. Those that are nearest will excel in Lustre and Bigness; the more remote Stars will give a fainter Light, and appear smaller to the Eye. Hence arise the Distribution of Stars, according to their Order and Dignity, into Classes; the first Class containing those which are nearest to us, are called Stars of the first Magnitude; those that are next to them, are Stars of the second Magnitude ... and so forth, 'till we come to the Stars of the sixth Magnitude, which comprehend the smallest Stars that can be discerned with the bare Eye. For all the other Stars, which are only seen by the Help of a Telescope [...]

And even among those Stars which are reckoned of the brightest Class, there appears a Variety of Magnitude; for Sirius or Arcturus are each of them brighter than Aldebaran [...] And there are some Stars of such an intermedial Order, that the Astronomers have differed in classing of them; some putting the same Stars in one Class, others in another. For Example: The little Dog was by Tycho placed among the Stars of the second Magnitude, which Ptolemy reckoned among the Stars of the first Class [...]

Distribution on the Sky

In the modern scale, the 20 brightest stars of Hipparchos have magnitudes between -1.5 (Sirius) and +1.6 (Bellatrix, γ Orionis). The table below shows 22 stars brighter than +1.5 mag, but 5 of them the Greek astronomers probably didn't know for their far southern position.

Epsilon Canis Majoris has an apparent magnitude of almost exactly 1.5, so it may be considered a first magnitude sometimes due to minor variations.

Twelve of the 22 brightest stars are on the actual Northern sky, ten on Southern sky. But on the seasonal evening sky, they are unevenly distributed: In Europe and USA 12–13 stars are visible in winter, but only 6–7 in summer. Nine of the brightest winter stars are part of the Winter Hexagon or surrounded by it.

First-magnitude deep-sky objects

Beside stars there are also deep-sky objects that are first-magnitude objects, accumulatively brighter than +1.50, such as the Large Magellanic Cloud, Milky Way, Carina Nebula, Hyades, Pleiades and the Alpha Persei Cluster (with Eta Carinae, Theta Tauri, Alcyone and Mirfak as the brightest stars of the latter four).

Alpha<sup>1</sup> Capricorni Star in the constellation Capricornus

Alpha1 Capricorni, Latinized from α1 Capricorni, is a distant, binary star system dominated by a highly luminous star in the constellation of Capricornus, north of the ecliptic. It has the traditional star names Prima Giedi and Algiedi Prima. The system is separated from the brighter Alpha2 Capricorni by 0.11° of the sky, a gap resolvable with the naked eye, similar to Mizar and Alcor. Both are not to be confused with much fainter 3 Capricorni nor somewhat fainter Nu Capricorni which are 3 to 6 times the angular distance apart than separate the two Alpha stars, respectively.

20 Ceti is a single star located around 590 light years away in the equatorial constellation of Cetus. It is faintly visible to the naked eye with apparent magnitude is 4.76. The Bright Star Catalogue has this star classified as M0III, matching an aging red giant star that has consumed the hydrogen at its core and expanded. Houk and Swift (1999) listed an earlier class of K5 III. It has around 60 times the Sun's radius and is radiating about 800 times the Sun's luminosity from its enlarged photosphere at an effective temperature of 3,700 K.

110 Herculis is a star in the northern constellation of Hercules. Its apparent magnitude is 4.19, and it can be faintly seen with the naked eye, according to the Bortle scale. Based on parallax estimates made by the Hipparcos spacecraft, the star is located fairly close, about 62.7 light-years away.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">HD 63032</span> Binary star system in the constellation Puppis

c Puppis, also known as HD 63032 and HR 3017, is a spectroscopic binary star in the constellation Puppis. Its apparent magnitude is 3.61. Located around 347 parsecs (1,130 ly) distant, the primary is an orange-red bright giant or supergiant of spectral type K2.5Ib-IIa or K5IIa, while the secondary, discovered in 1983, is a blue main-sequence star of spectral type B9V. The system is the brightest member of the open cluster NGC 2451, over two magnitudes brighter than every other star in the cluster. As the turnoff point of the cluster is currently around B7, the parameters of the system fit with cluster membership.

15 Lyncis is a binary star system in the northern constellation of Lynx. It is visible to the naked eye as a faint point of light with a combined apparent visual magnitude of 4.35. Based on the system's parallax, it is located 178 light-years away. The pair are moving away from the Earth with a heliocentric radial velocity of +2 km/s.

1 Pegasi is a triple star system in the constellation Pegasus, located approximately 156 light years away from the Sun based on parallax. It is visible to the naked eye as a faint, orange-hued star with an apparent visual magnitude of 4.09. The system is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentric radial velocity of −11 km/s.

It has an apparent visual magnitude of 5.9 making it faintly visible to the naked eye from dark suburban skies. Parallax measurements with the Hipparcos spacecraft put this system at a distance of roughly 350 light years.

S Scuti is a carbon star located in the constellation Scutum. Parallax measurements by Hipparcos put it at a distance of approximately 1,300 light-years. Its apparent magnitude is 6.80, making it visible to the naked eye only under excellent conditions.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">64 Draconis</span> Star in the constellation Draco

64 Draconis is a single star in the northern circumpolar constellation of Draco, located 452 light years away. It has the Bayer designation of e Draconis; 64 Draconis is the Flamsteed designation. The object is visible to the naked eye as a dim, red-hued star with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.27. It is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentric radial velocity of −36 km/s, and it is predicted to come as close as 204 ly in around 4.3 million years.
