Gil Duran is an American journalist based in San Francisco. He has served as the California opinion editor for The Sacramento Bee and press secretary for California governor Jerry Brown. [1]
From 2008 to 2010,Duran was communications director for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein. He was press secretary to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa from 2007 to 2008. [2]
In 2018,Duran became the California opinion editor for The Sacramento Bee and oversaw strategy for McClatchy's five California news organizations:The Sacramento Bee,The Fresno Bee,The Modesto Bee,The Merced Sun-Star and The Tribune in San Luis Obispo. [3]

She was nominated by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as chief justice on July 22,2010,and retained in office by California voters on November 2,2010,she was sworn in on January 3,2011 as California's first Filipino and first woman of color to serve as California's Chief Justice. Prior to her appointment as chief justice,Cantil-Sakauye had served in judicial offices on California's appellate and trial courts. On July 27,2022,she announced she would retire and not run for another 12 year term on the court in November and step down on January 1,2023,leaving Governor Newsom to appoint her replacement. On September 28,2022,the Public Policy Institute of California announced that Cantil-Sakauye would become its president and chief executive officer,effective January 1,2023. On September 21,2023,the Judicial Council of California voted unanimously to name the new Sacramento County courthouse after former Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye.

Proposition 55 is a California ballot proposition that passed on the November 8,2016 ballot,regarding extending by twelve years the temporary personal income tax increases enacted in 2012 on earnings over $250,000,with revenues allocated to K–12 schools,California Community Colleges,and,in certain years,healthcare. Proposition 55 will raise tax revenue by between $4 billion and $9 billion a year. Half of funds will go to schools and community colleges,up to $2 billion a year would go to Medi-Cal,and up to $1.5 billion will be saved and applied to debt.
