Hoholau is a suco in Aileu subdistrict, Aileu District, East Timor.^[1] The administrative area covers an area of 16.72 square kilometers (10.38 sq. mi) and, at the time of the 2010 census, it had a population of 766 people ^[2]

The administrative posts of East Timor are subdivided into 442 sucos ("villages") and 2,336 aldeias ("communities").

Aileu is the main township in Aileu District, East Timor. It is located 47 km southwest of Dili, the national capital, and had a population of 2,788 in 2015. In Portuguese Timor, the city was known as Vila General Carmona, after the Portuguese dictator António Óscar Carmona, but after World War II it was renamed. Aileu means "bent tree" in Mambai.

East Timor or Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a country in Maritime Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. Australia is the country's southern neighbour, separated by the Timor Sea. The country's size is about 15,007 km².

Geography

Hoholau lies to the west of the Aileu Subdistrict and has an area of 16.72 km² (10.38 sq. mi). To the east is the suco Liurai, to the north the suco Seloi Craic. In the west is the Ermera District, with its sub-districts Ermera (Suco Lauala) and Letefoho (Suco Eraulo). The border to Seloi Craic is largely formed by the Olomasi river. In north Hoholau lies the source of the Manomau river. Both rivers are tributaries of the Gleno. The rivers belong to the system of the Loes River.

Seloi Craic is a suco in Aileu subdistrict, Aileu District, East Timor. The administrative area covers an area of 36.87 square kilometres and at the time of the 2010 census it had a population of 3328 people.

Ermera is a city in East Timor and a former capital of the East Timorese community, Ermera. Ermera in Mambai language means "red water." It has a population of 8,907. Its geographical coordinates are 8°45′8″S125°23′49″E, and it lies 1,195 metres (3,921 ft) above sea level. Ermera's center lies in the Suco of Poetete.

The Loes River is a river in East Timor and is one of the few permanently flowing rivers in the northern part of the country.

Only minor roads lead to Hoholau. To the north lie the villages Mau Uluria (Mauloria), Acolimamate and Ouelae, in the center Fisunia, in the south Manama. In Acolimamate there is a makeshift helipad and an elementary school, the Escola Primaria No. 8 Hoholau.

In Suco Hoholau are the five aldeias: Aslimhati, Hatulai, Manubata, Mau and Uluria Saharai.

History

In 1977, during the war against the Indonesian invaders, the Central Committee of the FRETILIN ordered that the population should be relocated from Hoholau to Lequidoe. 500 residents moved, leaving only a small number behind. A FRETILIN member murdered several people who refused to relocate. The suco was attacked by the Indonesian army, and three people died. In Lequidoe, about 300 people were killed.

During the East Timor crisis in September 1999, members of the militia group AHI (Aku Hidup dengan Integrasi) systematically destroyed sucos in Aileu, including Hoholau. Houses were burned down and livestock were killed.

The 1999 East Timorese crisis began with attacks of general violence throughout the country, centered in the capital Dili. The violence erupted after a majority of eligible East Timorese voters chose independence from Indonesia. Some 1,400 civilians are believed to have died. A UN-authorized force (INTERFET) consisting mainly of Australian Defence Force personnel was deployed to East Timor to establish and maintain peace.

In the elections of 2004/2005, Soares Duarte was elected Chefe de Suco and, in 2009, confirmed in his position.

Demographics

766 residents live in the suco (down from 806 in 2004). About 91% of the population stated Mambai as their native language. About 8% speak Tetum Prasa.

Fohoren is a village and suco in the subdistrict of Fohorem, Cova Lima District, East Timor. According to the 2004 census, the suco of Fohoren has a population of 1,468 people. Its current chief is Agusto Cardoso.

Alas is a town in Alas Subdistrict. It is located in the interior of the island, 294 metres above sea level. As the crow flies, Alas is 56 km southeast of the state capital Dili und 7 km to the East of Same. Alas lies to the North of the Suco of Mahaquidan, and the Alas suburbs of Uma Mean and Beremanek are located in Mahaquidan. The suburbs of Lurin und Ailora are in the suco of Taitudac. It is located in the interior of the island, 294 metres above sea level. As the crow flies, Alas is 56 km southeast of the state capital Dili und 7 km to the East of Same. Aissirimou is a village and suco in Aileu Subdistrict, Aileu District, East Timor. The administrative area covers an area of 29.81 square kilometres and at the time of the 2010 census it had a population of 2192 people.

Bandudato is a suco of Aileu subdistrict, Aileu District, East Timor. The administrative area covers an area of 30.65 square kilometres and at the time of the 2010 census it had a population of 1426 people.
