Horn Cable TV (HCTV) is a Somali news-based private television channel.

Overview

Founded in 2003, Horn Cable TV broadcasts in Somali from its headquarters in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. [1] The station also has studios in Mogadishu and London, among other areas. [2]

Horn Cable TV is owned by Farhan Haji Ali, a young Hargeisa-based Somali entrepreneur who is also the owner of the FAACO. [2]

The station generates revenue from advertising. [2]

Programs

Horn Cable TV broadcasts around-the-clock across Somaliland and Somalia. Through satellite, its transmissions also reach other parts of the continent, Europe, Asia, and areas in Australia. The station is also available as a live webstream. [2]

HCTV's programming covers a wide range of genres. Among these are news and current affairs, business, politics, drama, music and religious programs. [2]

Staff

Horn Cable Television has a staff of around 90 ground reporters, who are stationed throughout the Horn of Africa region and nearby areas. Around 60 journalists are based at the station's headquarters, with additional personnel of 7 in Mogadishu. [2]

Mohamoud Sheikh Dalmar serves as a radio and television producer for the channel. [3] [4] Additionally, Hamdi Hussein is the Director of its Mogadishu branch. [2]

Hargeisa Capital and largest city of Somaliland

Hargeisa is the capital and largest city of Somaliland. It is located in the Maroodi Jeex region of the Horn of Africa. It succeeded Berbera as the capital of the British Somaliland Protectorate in 1941. Hargeisa was also the second largest city in Somalia after the capital Mogadishu. The city also served as the second capital of the Isaaq Sultanate during the mid-to-late 19th century.

Ahmed Ismail Samatar

Ahmed Ismail Samatar is a Somali writer, professor and former dean of the Institute for Global Citizenship at Macalester College. He is the editor of Bildhaan: An International Journal of Somali Studies, and brother of Abdi Ismail Samatar, chair of the geography department at the University of Minnesota. Samatar joined the Peace, Unity, and Development Party, the ruling party of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland in June 2016. Samatar is being widely touted as a possible candidate for Somaliland's 2022 presidential elections.

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) is the internationally recognised government of Somalia, and the first attempt to create a central government in Somalia since the collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic. It replaced the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia on 20 August 2012 with the adoption of the Constitution of Somalia.

HornAfrik was a media organization based in Mogadishu, Somalia. Prior to its closure in 2010, it was the first independent radio network to have its headquarters in the city. HornAfrik operated Radio HornAfrik, as well as one other radio station, a television station, a website and a training research center.

Ahmed Abdisalam Adan, also known as Ahmed Mohamed Aden, is a Somali radio journalist, media founder and politician. He is a co-founder of HornAfrik Media Inc based in Mogadishu. In the 2000s, he also served as a Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security in the former Transitional Federal Government.

Puntland TV and Radio is the public broadcasting network of the autonomous Puntland region of Somalia. Its headquarters are at the regional capital of Garowe. The service also maintains an office in London. Founded in April 2013, Puntland TV and Radio broadcasts locally in Somali via terrestrial service. It also airs programs globally through satellite. Radio Puntland broadcasts internationally via shortwave, with its transmission reaching as far as Finland. Its standard programming includes general news, focusing on regional developments, sports and entertainment.

Somaliland is a democratic nation in the Horn of Africa, Somaliland has endorsed the freedom of expression and free press since it declared its independence from Somalia. According to Somaliland's constitution and Somaliland media laws, defamation and libel are not criminal offenses; aggrieved parties may seek redress in civil courts.

Ahmed Hassan Awke Somali journalist from 1972 to 2015

Ahmed Hassan Awke was a veteran Somali journalist, who spent most of his life in the media industry. Awke who is often considered to be one of the best Somali journalists because of his very fluent Somali, and was often used as a favorite commentator He served as a special reporter for Somalia's late president Siad Barre until it collapsed in 1991. He hailed from the Jibril Abokor, a Sa'ad Musa sub-division of the Habr Awal Isaaq clan that predominately inhabits the Gabiley region.

Somaliland War of Independence 1981–1991 conflict part of Somali Civil War

The Somaliland War of Independence was a rebellion waged by the Somali National Movement against the ruling military junta in Somalia led by General Siad Barre lasting from its founding on 6 April 1981 and ended on 18 May 1991 when the SNM declared what was then northern Somalia independent as the Republic of Somaliland. The conflict served as the main theater of the larger Somali Rebellion that started in 1978. The conflict was in response to the harsh policies enacted by the Barre regime against the main clan family in Somaliland, the Isaaq, including a declaration of economic warfare on the Isaaq. These harsh policies were put into effect shortly after the conclusion of the disastrous Ogaden war in 1978.
