A PDP leader in Katsina, Tasiu Umar Mashi, died in November 2009, in the office of the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Danazumi Doma. Controversy over the circumstances leading to his death stirred up tensions between rival PDP factions, one supporting Shema and the other led by the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Dr. Abba Sayyadi Ruma. In December 2010, Shema again won the Peoples democratic party's governorship primaries, in a contest in which he was the only candidate. [4]

He married to Fatima Ibrahim Shema, they have children, three men and one woman together. [5]

Barewa College is a college in Zaria, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria. Founded in 1921 by British Governor General Hugh Clifford, it was originally known as Katsina College. It switched its name to Kaduna College in 1938 and to Government College, Zaria in 1949 before settling on Barewa College. It is one of the largest boarding schools in Northern Nigeria and was the most-celebrated post-primary schools there up to the early 1960s. The school is known for the large number of elites from the region who attended and counts among its alumni include Tafawa Balewa who was Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 to 1966, four heads of state of Nigeria.

Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU), formerly Katsina State University, was established by the Katsina State Government in 2006, to "serve as a nucleus for socio-economic, technological and political development of the State by producing highly skilled human resource through conventional face-to-face and distance learning modes." Umaru Musa Yar'adua, then the executive governor of Katsina State and later the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, began the work of creating the university before his death in 2010.

Garba Yakubu Lado Danmarkepronunciation is a Nigerian businessman who became a Member of the House of Representatives (2003–2007) and was elected a Federal Senator in April 2007 for Katsina South constituency of Katsina State as a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Aminu Bello Masari(Listen) is a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Katsina State from 2015 to 2023. He was the Commissioner for works, housing and transport Katsina state from 1991 to 1993. He was the speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007. Masari hails from Masari village of Kafur local government area of Katsina State.

Justice Saddik Abdullahi Mahuta is the longest-serving chief judge in Katsina State, Nigeria from 1991 to 2013, and he administered the oath of office to civilian governors of Katsina State from Alhaji Sa'idu Barda in 1991 to Barrister Ibrahim Shehu Shema in 2011.

The 2011 Katsina State gubernatorial election occurred on 26 April 2011. PDP candidate Ibrahim Shema won the election, defeating CPC Aminu Bello Masari and 8 other candidates.

The 2023 Katsina State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Katsina State, concurrent with elections to the Katsina State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Aminu Bello Masari is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Katsina State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Katsina State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.
