In medicine, traumatology is the study of wounds and injuries caused by accidents or violence to a person, and the surgical therapy and repair of the damage. Traumatology is a branch of medicine. It is often considered a subset of surgery and in countries without the specialty of trauma surgery it is most often a sub-specialty to orthopedic surgery. Traumatology may also be known as accident surgery.

A joint dislocation, also called luxation, occurs when there is an abnormal separation in the joint, where two or more bones meet. A partial dislocation is referred to as a subluxation. Dislocations are often caused by sudden trauma on the joint like an impact or fall. A joint dislocation can cause damage to the surrounding ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Dislocations can occur in any major joint or minor joint. The most common joint dislocation is a shoulder dislocation.

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery is a biweekly peer reviewed medical journal in the field of orthopedic surgery. It is published by the non-profit corporation The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Inc. It was established as the Transactions of the American Orthopedic Association in 1889, published by the American Orthopedic Association. In 1903, volume 16 of the Transactions became the first volume of the American Journal of Orthopedic Surgery, which was renamed Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1919 and also became the official journal of the British Orthopaedic Association. The journal obtained its current name in 1921. As of 2016, it had a Journal Citation Reports impact factor of 4.8 and ranking of 10/197 (surgery), 2/76 (orthopedics).

Scoliosis and Spinal Disorders is an international, multidisciplinary open-access, peer-reviewed, online-only medical journal addressing all spine conditions. The journal encompasses all aspects of research on prevention, diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and cost-analyses of conservative and surgical management of all spinal deformities, disorders and conditions. Ashok Rajgopal is an Indian orthopaedic surgeon, credited with close to 20,000 Arthroscopic and over 35,000 Total Knee Arthroplasty surgeries and reported to be one of the most experienced in his field in India. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padmashri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the fields of orthopaedic surgery. Three-dimensional or two-dimensional analysis of the biomechanics involved in sporting tasks can assist in prevention of injury and enhancing athletic performance. Identification of abnormal movement mechanics provides physical therapists and Athletic trainers the ability to prescribe more accurate corrective exercise programs to prevent injury and improve exercise rehabilitation and progression following injury and assist in determining readiness to return to sport.

It was established in 1961 as the Journal of Trauma by Williams & Wilkins, obtaining its current name in 2012. The journal is currently published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and is the official journal of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Trauma Association of Canada, and the Western Trauma Association. Cornelis Nicolaas "Niek" van Dijk is an orthopaedic surgeon, a specialist in sports traumatology and arthroscopic surgery of the ankle and knee. Until 2016 Van Dijk was Full Professor in Orthopaedics and head of the Orthopaedic Department at the AMC-hospital in Amsterdam. He continues his career in the FIFA Medical Centres of excellence in Madrid and Porto. He is the founder of a characteristic approach, which has come to be known as the Amsterdam Foot & Ankle School :

Niek van Dijk has won renown as a leading authority for arthroscopic surgery of the ankle and the knee. In particular, he is known for his Amsterdam Ankle School, which places particular emphasis upon a painstaking diagnosis, followed by arthroscopy as a surgical resource rather than a mere diagnostic. His operative techniques have spread throughout the world, and have benefitted leading athletes, as well as ordinary people suffering from ankle problems.

João Duarte Coelho do Sameiro Espregueira-Mendes is a Portuguese orthopaedic surgeon, specialized in sports orthopaedics, traumatology and knee surgery. During his career, he has been engaged in scientific research, university teaching, the leadership of both national and international scientific societies and clinical practice as Clinical Director of the Clinica do Dragão, Espregueira-Mendes Sports Centre – FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence.

The Journal of Children's Orthopaedics is a bimonthly peer-reviewed medical journal, which was first published in March 2007. It is the official journal of the European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS) and is published in partnership with The British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery. The Journal of Children's Orthopaedics is a gold open access journal and hence articles published in the journal are available online to anyone, free of charge. A knee dislocation is an injury in which there is disruption of the knee joint between the tibia and the femur. Symptoms include pain and instability of the knee. Complications may include injury to an artery, most commonly the popliteal artery behind the knee, or compartment syndrome.

Riad Barmada, a Syrian-American orthopaedic surgeon and professor. Barmada was the head of orthopedics at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1984 to 1998 and served as the president of the Illinois Orthopedic Society and president of the Chicago Committee on Trauma.

Hans-Christoph Pape is a German surgeon and trauma surgeon and was appointed full professor of traumatology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich on 31 October 2016, effective 1 February 2017. He heads the Department of Traumatology at the University Hospital Zurich. In particular, his research on polytrauma, pelvic fractures and severe joint injuries (articular) helped him to achieve a high international profile. From 2005 to 2009, he was head of the trauma surgery department at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Pittsburgh, USA. From 2009 to 2016, he was head of the Department of Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen. Since March 2018, he has also once again been an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Pittsburgh.
