Josh Young is an American actor best known for appearing on Broadway in the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar as Judas and Amazing Grace , originating the role of John Newton.

Early life and education

Young was raised in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, and his family is Conservative Jewish. [1] He trained at the Pennsylvania Governors School for the Arts and holds a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre from Syracuse University. [2]

Career

In 2005, Young performed as Tony in the 50th-anniversary international tour of West Side Story . [3] [4]

He performed in several shows in the Stratford Festival, including The Grapes of Wrath (Connie), Evita (Che), and Kiss Me Kate (Paul). [5]

For his role as Che in Evita , he won the Broadway World Toronto Award for Best Actor in a Musical. [6] He then played Marius in a tour of Les Misérables . [7]

From 2011 to 2012, Young played the role of Judas in the Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar for which he was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. [8] On May 8, 2012, he won the Theatre World Award for an outstanding Broadway debut performance for this role. [9]

In March 2013, Young performed "Bring On the Men" from the Broadway musical Jekyll & Hyde at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS fundraising concert Broadway Backwards. [10]

In 2015, he starred in the musical Amazing Grace on Broadway in the role of John Newton. [11] He can be heard on the cast recording, which was released in February 2016. [12] He won a Broadway World Award for this role in the Chicago Premiere at Bank of America Theatre. [6]

Young appeared as Dr. Neville Craven in the 2016 and 2017 Shakespeare Theatre Company and 5th Avenue Theatre productions of The Secret Garden . [13] He was also in the 25th anniversary concert of The Secret Garden at the Lincoln Center in early 2016, appearing as Captain Albert Lennox. [14] [15]

In 2019, Young joined the faculty of Oakland University. [16] In 2023, Young joined the faculty of Missouri State University.

Personal life

On January 12, 2017, Young got engaged to actress Emily Padgett. [17] They were married on June 3, 2018. [18] [19] The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in February 2019. [20] They had a son in November 2020. [21]

This was the first Lloyd Webber and Rice musical to be performed publicly; their first collaboration, The Likes of Us, written in 1965, was not performed until 2005. Its family-friendly retelling of Joseph, familiar themes, and catchy music have resulted in numerous stagings. According to the owner of the copyright, the Really Useful Group, by 2008 more than 20,000 schools and amateur theatre groups had staged productions.

His most notable roles include Markko Rivera on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live, Paul in the 2006 revival of the Broadway musical A Chorus Line, the SQUIP in both the Off-Broadway and Broadway run of Be More Chill, of Xander in Lysistrata Jones on Broadway and Shoe on the teen drama Beyond the Break. Amazing Grace is a musical with music and lyrics by Christopher Smith and a book by Smith and Arthur Giron. The musical is Smith's first foray as a professional writer or composer. It is based loosely on the life of John Newton, an English slave trader who later became an Anglican priest and eventually an abolitionist. He wrote many hymns, including "Amazing Grace".

Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert is an American musical television special that was broadcast live on NBC on April 1, 2018 and rebroadcast on Easter Sunday 2020, April 12, 2020. Executively produced by Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, and Marc Platt, it was a staged concert performance of the 1970 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. It received positive reviews from critics but had a smaller viewership than earlier musical specials.

Last Days of Summer is a musical with music by Jason Howland and lyrics and a book by Steve Kluger. Based on the 1998 epistolary novel of the same name written by Kluger, the musical made its world premiere try-out at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri in September 2018. The musical centers on Joey Margolis, a young boy living in 1940s Brooklyn and his relationship with Charlie Banks, the all-star third baseman for the New York Giants.
