Kamrussamad (born 20 July 1974) is an Indonesian politician who has served as a member of the People's Representative Council since 2019. He is part of the Gerindra Party.
Kamrussamad was born in Ma'rang ,a district located in South Sulawesi north of the provincial capital of Makassar,on 20 July 1974. He was the fifth of seven children. He moved to Makassar for middle school,and studied industrial engineering at the Indonesian Muslim University in Makassar. He moved to Jakarta in 1999. He later obtained a master's degree in international business from the University of Indonesia. [1]
In 2017,he was elected as the Coordinating President for the Alumni Corps of the Muslim Students' Association. [2] In 2022,he was elected as president of the Alumni Corps' entrepreneurs' association. [3]
In the 2004 Indonesian legislative election,he unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the People's Representative Council (DPR) as a Golkar candidate. In the 2009 election,he ran for a seat at the Regional Representative Council and again did not win a seat. His third failed attempt was in the 2014 election,when he ran for a DPR seat under Gerindra in South Sulawesi's 2nd electoral district. [2] Additionally,he also ran in the 2010 and 2015 regency elections for Pangkajene and Islands Regency,as a regent candidate in 2010 and as a vice-regent candidate in 2015. He received 6.49% of votes in 2010 and 41.78% in 2015,losing in both elections. [4] [5] During the 2014 election,Kamrussamad had become chairman of Gerindra's branch in Pangkejene and Islands. [6] He still holds the chairmanship as of 2023. [7]
Kamrussamad ran again as a DPR member in the 2019 election,this time from Jakarta's 3rd electoral district. He won 83,562 votes,the fourth highest in the district and the highest of Gerindra candidates,winning a seat in the legislature. [8] He was sworn in as a legislator on 1 October 2019. [9] Within the council,Kamrussamad is a member of its eleventh commission on finance and banking. [10]
He has promoted carbon emission trading in Indonesia,citing potential revenues from Indonesian rainforests. [11] He has also supported a ban by the Indonesian Trade Ministry on the import of secondhand clothes. [12] [13]
The Democratic Party is a constitutional populist political party in Indonesia. It was founded on 9 September 2001. It states its ideology to be based on Pancasila.
Presidential elections were held in Indonesia on 8 July 2009. The elections returned a president and vice president for the 2009–2014 term. Incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono,elected with a 20% margin in the 2004 election,sought a second term against former President Megawati Sukarnoputri in a rematch of the 2004 election,as well as incumbent Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Securing a majority of the votes in a landslide victory in the first round,Yudhoyono was re-elected without the need to proceed to a second round,scheduled to be held on 8 September if no candidate received a majority of the popular vote. Yudhoyono was officially declared the victor of the election on 23 July 2009,by the General Election Commission (KPU). At the time of his re-election victory,Yudhoyono,with nearly 74 million votes in his favour,held the record for the highest number of votes for a single person in any democratic election in history,surpassing Barack Obama's total of 69 million votes in the 2008 United States presidential election. His record was surpassed by his successor Joko Widodo who won 85 million votes in 2019.
The Gerindra Party is a right-wing populist political party in Indonesia. Formed in 2008,Gerindra serves as the political vehicle of former general Prabowo Subianto. It is presently the third-largest party in the House of Representatives,where it has 78 seats. Gerindra had positioned itself as an opposition party,but in 2019 it joined President Joko Widodo's Onward Indonesia Cabinet,despite Prabowo having run against Widodo in Indonesia's 2014 and 2019 presidential elections.
Presidential elections were held in Indonesia on 9 July 2014,with former general Prabowo Subianto contesting the elections against the governor of Jakarta,Joko Widodo;incumbent president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was constitutionally barred from seeking a third term in office. On 22 July the General Elections Commission (KPU) announced Joko Widodo's victory. He and his vice president,Jusuf Kalla,were sworn-in on 20 October 2014,for a 5-year term.

General elections are scheduled to be held in Indonesia on 14 February 2024 to elect the President,Vice President,People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) which consists of the DPR and the DPD,and members of local legislative bodies. The newly elected members of the MPR will be sworn in on 1 October 2024,while the elected President and Vice President will be sworn in on 20 October 2024. Incumbent President Joko Widodo is ineligible to run for a third term due to the term limits established by the Indonesian constitution.
