Luc De Vos (12 July 1962 – 29 November 2014) was a Belgian musician and writer, best known as the lead singer of the Dutch-language alternative rock formation Gorki and as a guest in multiple television shows. He also voiced VW bus in the Flemish version of the Disney movie Cars . He died of acute organ failure on the 29 November 2014 in his working apartment in Ghent. [1] [2] [3]

Alternative rock is a style of rock music that emerged from the independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular in the 1990s. In this instance, the word "alternative" refers to the genre's distinction from mainstream rock music. The term's original meaning was broader, referring to a generation of musicians unified by their collective debt to either the musical style or simply the independent, DIY ethos of punk rock, which in the late 1970s laid the groundwork for alternative music. At times, "alternative" has been used as a catch-all description for music from underground rock artists that receives mainstream recognition, or for any music, whether rock or not, that is seen to be descended from punk rock.

Gorki (band) Belgian band

Gorki was a Belgian rock group, in its most recent line-up consisting of Luc De Vos, Luc Heyvaerts, Erik Van Biesen, Thomas Vanelslander (guitarist) and Bert Huysentruyt (drums). Three songs by Gorki were number one hits in the Studio Brussel alternative hitlist De Afrekening in Belgium: 'Lieve kleine piranha', 'Schaduw in de schemering and 'Joerie' in 2006. Luc De Vos died on 29 November 2014.

Early life

De Vos was born in 1962 in the village of Wippelgem near Ghent as the youngest of 7 children. He had his secondary education at the Sint-Lievenscollege in Ghent. As a toddler, he knew that he wanted to become a rockstar, a job he described as a privilege rather than a job, once he had it. [4] [5]

With his original band Gorky, De Vos ended third in Humo's Rock Rally in 1990. [4] Together with Noordkaap, who won the same Rock Rally, he brought the genre of Dutch language rock music to the people's attention. [6] After Gorky disbanded in 1993, Luc De Vos continued under the name Gorki. [7] Stijn Meuris described the genre of Gorki's songs and De Vos's lyrics as "Flemish poetry with the boots in the clay" and "I have no clue what this guy was talking about, but I understood him". [6] Temporary side projects of De Vos include English language rock formation Automatic Buffalo which he started with the members of Ashbury Faith, and a solo tour in 2010. [7] [8]

Humo's Rock Rally is a Belgian contest for rock bands, organized every second year since 1978. It is organized by the Belgian magazine HUMO.

Noordkaap was a Belgian rock band with Stijn Meuris as singer. They had several well-known songs such as "Ik Hou Van U" and "Satelliet S.U.Z.Y."

Dutch language West Germanic language

Dutch(Nederlands ) is a West Germanic language spoken by around 23 million people as a first language and 5 million people as a second language, constituting the majority of people in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is the third most widely spoken Germanic language, after its close relatives English and German.

With his bands Gorky/Gorki, he had 3 singles and 12 albums in the Flemish charts (the album charts only start in 1995, i.e. after his first albums were released). This included 5 top ten albums. [9]

Writing career

Luc De Vos wrote columns for, among others, Flemish radio station Studio Brussel and the Ghent city magazine Zone 09/. [4] He also wrote several books, the most recent of which, Paddenkoppenland (Toadheadsland), was described as an autobiography even though De Vos himself denied this. [10]

Flemish variety of the Dutch language as spoken in Flanders (Belgium)

Flemish (Vlaams) also called Flemish Dutch (Vlaams-Nederlands), Belgian Dutch, or Southern Dutch (Zuid-Nederlands), is a Lower Franconian / Dutch dialect. It is spoken in the whole northern region of Belgium as well as French Flanders and the Dutch Zeelandic Flanders by approximately 6.5 million people. The term is used in at least five ways. These are:

  1. as an indication of Dutch written and spoken in Flanders including the Dutch standard language as well as the non-standardized dialects, including intermediate languages between dialect and standard. Some linguists avoid the term Flemish in this context and prefer the designation Belgian-Dutch or South-Dutch.
  2. as a synonym for the so-called intermediate language in Flanders region, the Tussentaal.
  3. as an indication for the non-standardized dialects and regiolects of Flanders region.
  4. as an indication of the non-standardized dialects of only the former County of Flanders, ie the current provinces of West Flanders and East Flanders, Zeelandic Flanders and Frans-Vlaanderen.
  5. as an indication of the non-standardized West Flemish dialects of the province of West Flanders, the Dutch Zeelandic Flanders and French Frans-Vlaanderen.
Studio Brussel

Studio Brussel(Studio Brussels) is a Dutch-speaking radio station in Belgium, owned by the VRT. The music played is considered more alternative than the other big radio stations, and is aimed mainly at a youth audience. The channel is an initiative of the Flemish Government and is financed principally by taxes.

Death

Luc De Vos was found dead in the early evening of 29 November 2014 in his working apartment in Ghent. [1] After an autopsy, both suicide and malicious intent were ruled out. The cause of death was concluded to be acute failure of vital organs. [3] He left a wife and a son.

De Vos' public funeral at Saint Peter's Church in Ghent took place on Saturday 6 December 2014. [11] Around 15,000 people assembled outside on the Saint Peter's Square as the church was full. [12] He was buried in the famous Catholic cemetery of Campo Santo. [13]

Legacy

Luc De Vos's most famous song was "Mia". Though originally a B-side, it soon grew to be one of the most popular songs in Flanders, as well as gaining a cult following in the Netherlands, having been voted on top of multiple radio station's lists of most timeless songs, including reaching the #1 spot three years in a row on "De Tijdloze 100", the best song of all-time list voted for by the listeners of Studio Brussel. The Belgian provincial, municipal and district elections of 2006 took place on Sunday 8 October 2006.
