Mana Contemporary is a cultural center in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States with affiliated centers in Chicago and Miami.
Opened in May 2011, the center was founded by moving company mogul Moishe Mana. [1] Shai Baitel and the artist Yigal Ozeri are among the co-founders. [2] [3]
The one million square foot facility in Jersey City is situated in a 1920s-era brick former manufacturing building in the city's Marion Section near Marion Junction that is also an extension of the fine arts transportation department of Moishe's Moving Systems. [4] [5]
In 2021 Mana Contemporary's Executive Director Eugene Lemay was placed on administrative leave due to his indictment of tax fraud and conspiracy for evading to pay nearly $8 million to the IRS while helping to run Moishe's Moving Systems. [6]
In February 2022, Kele McComsey was appointed Mana's new director. [7] McComsey was the President and Senior Partner of SurroundArt prior to joining Mana Contemporary in 2015.
The center provides services, spaces, and programming for artists, collectors, curators, performers, students and community.
It includes artist studios, exhibition spaces, and storage and is home to the Middle East Center for the Arts (MECA), [8] [9] [10] the archives of the International Center of Photography [11] , the estates of Jonas Mekas, Walter de Maria, Irving Penn, Dan Flavin among other; the Magnum Foundation, the dance companies of Karole Armitage [12] and Shen Wei, and foundations established by Eileen S Kaminsky (ESKFF) and Carole Feuerman. The artist Amy Sherald has her studio in Mana (NJ). [13]
The building is also home to the Richard Meier Model Museum, an exhibition of architectural projects, sculptures and collages by Richard Meier. [14] [15] [16] [17]
Mana Decentralized is an online and physical platform selling artworks directly to collectors, launched in April 2019. [18]
Richard Meier is an American abstract artist and architect, whose geometric designs make prominent use of the color white. A winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1984, Meier has designed several iconic buildings including the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and San Jose City Hall. In 2018, some of Meier's employees accused him of sexual assault, which led to him resigning from his firm in 2021.
Karole Armitage is an American dancer and choreographer currently based in New York City. She is artistic director of Armitage Gone! Dance, a contemporary dance company that performs several times annually in New York City as well as touring internationally. She was dubbed the “punk ballerina” in the 1980s. She earned a Tony nomination for her choreography of the Broadway musical Hair.
The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) in Baltimore, Maryland, is an art museum that was founded in 1914. Lowery Stokes Sims is an American art historian and curator of modern and contemporary art known for her expertise in the work of African, African American, Latinx, Native and Asian American artists such as Wifredo Lam, Fritz Scholder, Romare Bearden, Joyce J. Scott and others. She served on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Museum of Arts and Design. She has frequently served as a guest curator, lectured internationally and published extensively, and has received many public appointments. Sims was featured in the 2010 documentary film !Women Art Revolution.
David Salle is an American Postmodern painter, printmaker, photographer, and stage designer. Salle was born in Norman, Oklahoma, and lives and works in East Hampton, New York. He earned a BFA and MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California, where he studied with John Baldessari. Salle’s work first came to public attention in New York City in the early 1980s.

Moishe Mana is a billionaire businessman and real estate developer. Originally from Israel, Mana emigrated to the US in 1983, where he founded his first business, Moishe's Moving Systems. He started further businesses including: GRM Document Management, the country's third largest document storage business; Milk Studios, a media and entertainment conglomerate; and Mana Contemporary, an art center.
Tony Feher was an American sculptor. He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin, in 1978. He began exhibiting fine art in 1980 and had his first solo show at Wooster Gardens in 1994, and shortly thereafter was reviewed favorably by Roberta Smith in a short article titled "Three Artists Who Favor Chaos:" "Tony Feher's chaos is actually rather well-organized and instinctively archival and devotional." Since then, notable solo exhibitions of his work have taken place at Diverseworks in Houston; Sikkema Jenkins & Co., Pace Gallery, and D’Amelio Terras in New York; ACME in Los Angeles; Anthony Meier Fine Arts in San Francisco; and The Suburban in Oak Park, Illinois.
Amy Sherald is an American painter. She works mostly as a portraitist depicting African Americans in everyday settings. Her style is simplified realism, involving staged photographs of her subjects. Since 2012, her work has used grisaille to portray skin tones, a choice she describes as intended to challenge conventions about skin color and race.
Eugene Lemay is an artist and the former president and founder of Mana Contemporary, located in Jersey City, Chicago, and Miami. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and moved to Israel at age thirteen with his family, where he spent his adolescence and young-adult life in a kibbutz. After serving in the Israeli Army, he moved to New York and started working at Moishe's Moving Systems. He is an active artist based in Jersey City and Miami, working across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, installation, sound, new-media technology, and other mixed media, and he's exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. In October 2021 Lemay was charged by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York with an elaborate conspiracy to defraud the IRS for his attempt to evade $7.8 million in payroll taxes and was removed from his role as Executive Director of Mana Contemporary.
First Lady Michelle Obama, initially titled Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama, is a portrait of former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, painted by the artist Amy Sherald. Unveiled in 2018, it hangs in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in Washington, D.C. The six-by-five-foot oil-on-linen painting shows Obama, rendered in Sherald's signature grisaille, resting her chin lightly on her hand, as a geometric print dress flows outward filling the frame against a sky-blue background.

Shai Baitel is an artistic director and art entrepreneur. He is a contributor and writer for several prominent publications as well as an active philanthropist. He is the co-founder and executive director of Mana Contemporary, a global, multidisciplinary and comprehensive arts center. In 2020, Baitel was announced as the inaugural artistic director of The Modern Art Museum Shanghai.
