The Metropolitan Collegiate Summer Baseball League of Illinois is a collegiate summer baseball league consisting of eight teams based in Illinois. Formed in 1978, the league is affiliated within the National Amateur Baseball Federation. The majority of the teams are located in the Chicago, Illinois metropolitan area.

League Notes

The Metropolitan Collegiate Summer Baseball League of Illinois (MCBSI) is nicknamed the "Metro League." Founded in 1978, the League was originally named the Metro Thoroughbred League of Illinois, before the league name was changed in 1987 to Metropolitan Collegiate Summer Baseball League of Illinois. [1]

The league notes that: "College players, home for the summer, can enjoy their families and friends, together with participating in a good competitive league. Official Major League (American League) rules are used with the exception of mandatory use of double ear flap helmets and college safety slide rule. The league has used wood bats since 1992." [1]

The Metropolitan Collegiate Summer Baseball League of Illinois plays an annual All-Star game against the Chicago Suburban League All-Stars. The 2018 All-Star Game was played at Hoffer Field on Judson University’s campus in Elgin, Illinois. [2]

The league included the following eight teams for 2019: Crystal Lake Cardinals, Force Elite Baseball, Kane County Phantoms, Wheaton White Sox, Chicago Mudcats, Illinois Indians, Illinois Cardinals, Windy City Prospects. [3]

Don Kessinger American baseball player and manager

Donald Eulon Kessinger is an American former professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball as a shortstop from 1964 to 1979 for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox. A six-time All-Star, he was a light-hitting, defensive specialist who spent the majority of his career as the Chicago Cubs starting shortstop. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was considered one of the best shortstops in baseball. Kessinger is also notable for being the last player-manager in American League history.

Collegiate summer baseball Amateur baseball leagues for college students

Collegiate summer baseball leagues are amateur baseball leagues in the United States and Canada featuring players who have attended at least one year of college and have at least one year of athletic eligibility remaining. Generally, they operate from early June to early August. In contrast to college baseball, which allow aluminum or other composite baseball bats, players in these leagues use only wooden bats, hence the common nickname of these leagues as "wood-bat leagues". Collegiate summer leagues allow college baseball players the ability to compete using professional rules and equipment, giving them experience and allowing professional scouts the opportunity to observe players under such conditions.

Prospect League

The Prospect League is a collegiate summer baseball league comprising teams of college players from North America and beyond. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. So as to maintain their college eligibility, players are not paid. Beginning in 2012, the league added four games to the season, making a total of 60 games per team.

Normal CornBelters

The Normal CornBelters are a collegiate, wood bat summer baseball team based in Normal, Illinois, which is part of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area. The franchise was formerly a professional team, and was a member of the independent Frontier League, which is not affiliated with Major League Baseball. Beginning with the 2019 season, the team plays in the West Division of the Prospect League along with the Cape Catfish, DuPage Pistol Shrimp, O'Fallon Hoots, Quincy Gems and Springfield Sliders.
