Michael James Ellis (born 29 September 1946) is a retired South African politician and educator, who served as Deputy Chief Whip of the opposition Democratic Alliance in 1999-2011, and as the party's provincial leader in KwaZulu-Natal between 2006 and 2009. [1] Ellis is one of the party's longest serving Parliamentarians, having first entered parliament as a candidate of the pro-Democracy Progressive Federal Party in 1987. [1] Prior to that he was President of the Natal Teachers' Society, and served as headmaster and deputy headmaster at several KwaZulu-Natal schools. [1]

Background

Ellis was born in Pietermaritzburg, and attended Northlands Boys High School and the University of Natal. [1] He graduated with a BA in History and Political Science, and also obtained a University Education Diploma. He later also obtained a B.Ed degree. Upon graduating, Ellis worked as a teacher at Beachwood High School, which later became Northwood School. [2] In 1976 he took up a post as deputy headmaster at Penzance Primary School, and after spending two years as deputy headmaster at Kingsway High School, returned to Penzance to become the school's headmaster. [2] In 1984 he returned to another of his former schools, Beachwood, as head teacher. He was also appointed President of the Natal Teachers' Society. [1]

Parliamentarian

In 1987 Ellis left teaching to enter a career in politics. He won a seat in the House of Assembly in the Durban North constituency, under the banner of the Progressive Federal Party, and then won the seat again in 1989 under the party's new name, the Democratic Party. [1] Ellis was reelected to Parliament in 1994, in the country's first democratic election. In 1995 he became a party whip in the National Assembly, and he was appointed Deputy Chief Whip in 1999 - a position he held for more than a decade. [1]

During his tenure in Parliament, Ellis served on numerous portfolio committees, including Health, Education and Environmental Affairs and Tourism. [1] [2]

Ellis retired from Parliament in 2011, and was given a warm farewell by parliament, from opposition and government MPs alike. [3]

Family

Mike's eldest son, John Ellis, is a well-known South African singer-songwriter and guitarist. [4] His debut solo album, Come Out Fighting, released in June 2010, has a strong political message. It was dubbed 'Protest Songs' by the local press. [5] Songs such as 'A Luta Continua', 'Government Song', 'Rebels' and 'Rant' speak about being a white South African post-Apartheid.

John Henry Steenhuisen is a South African politician who has been serving as the Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance since 1 November 2020. He was the interim leader of the party from November 2019 to November 2020. He became Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly in October 2019. Steenhuisen served as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition under Mmusi Maimane from May 2014 to October 2019. He has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly since July 2011. 2019 South African general election

The 2019 South African general election was held on 8 May 2019 to elect a new National Assembly and provincial legislatures in each province. These were the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and determined who would become the next President of South Africa.

Zwakele Maxwell Mncwango is a South African politician. He is currently serving as a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature. He previously served as the Leader of the Opposition in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 2018 to 2019. He is the Provincial Leader of the KwaZulu-Natal Democratic Alliance (DA), elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2018. Mncwango was the party's KwaZulu-Natal Premier candidate for the 2019 election.

Watty Watson South African politician, former Chief Whip of the Official Opposition

Armiston "Watty" Watson was a South African politician and Democratic Alliance stalwart. He served as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly from 2011 to 2014 under the leadership of Lindiwe Mazibuko. He was first elected to Parliament in 1994 as an MP for the National Party of South Africa. Watson was a founding member of the Democratic Alliance and served as the party's leader in the National Council of Provinces prior to being selected as Chief Whip of the party's National Assembly caucus. Watson left Parliament after the May 2014 elections and died in October of the same year.

Narend Singh South African politician

Narend Singh is a South African politician who is the chief whip of the Inkatha Freedom Party in the National Assembly and the treasurer-general of the party. Prior to joining the National Assembly in 2007, he was a Member of the Executive Council in the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government from 1997 until 2006 and a member of the Senate from 1994 to 1996.

Sibongiseni Ngcobo is a South African politician who has served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the National Assembly of South Africa since May 2019. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he is currently the youngest Member of the National Assembly. Ngcobo served as a DA councillor in the Richmond Local Municipality from 2016 to 2019.
