Mission-based learning

Mission-based learning (MBL) is a student-centered approach created by the Smithsonian EdLab at the National Postal Museum. [1] It encourages students to make meaningful connections between themselves, their communities and the global community. Students build upon prior skills and use critical thinking, research skills, creativity, independent and collaborative work to solve authentic, relevant issues facing the modern era. Students employ diverse tools of the 21st-century classroom to broadcast their solutions and positively impact the global community.

The mission must have students researching an issue or concept that they can relate to and make connections to with objects, texts, films, or other resources. A stance must be made on the issue and a product such as an ad campaign or a narrative

Step 1 - Crafting the mission

  1. Consider the overarching or essential questions of the lesson or unit you are teaching. Use those questions to develop the mission.
  2. Consider these questions: What outcome do you want for your students? What is it that you want them to take away from the mission? Use the answers to the questions in writing your mission.
  3. Provide as few parameters as possible in order to promote critical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills. Provide encouragement and support to those students who will hesitate or resist such open-ended assignments.
  4. Incorporate a connection to their community, school, and/or culture in order to ensure student engagement and relevant application of skills.
  5. Develop guiding questions that will spark discussion, debate, and thoughts about the subject of your mission.
  6. Create a mission that requires students to participate in activism by finding a solution to the issue presented in the mission and broadcasting their opinions/feelings/solutions to the community affected by the issue.

Step 2 - Deploying the mission

  1. Start the mission with the guiding questions. Encourage discussion and debate. Record answers in plain view for students.
  2. Practice and model group roles in order to reduce in-fighting and uneven work distribution in groups.
  3. Provide limited scaffolding for students struggling with the mission. Use the following generic guiding questions, but modify them if needed to meet the needs of your students and/or mission:
  4. What common things do you see?
  5. How are you affected by the issue?
  6. What is your message? Now, what is your method of relaying this message?
  7. Stick to your time limit and stress the content over aesthetics. Encourage students to polish missions after the presentation.

Step 3 - Stepping back from the mission

Inquire students about their experience. These are some guiding questions for your class discussion:

  1. What tools did you use?
  2. What problems did you encounter?
  3. Did you have any surprises?
  4. If you had more time, what would you do differently?

Have students reflect individually:

  1. What elements of the mission were meaningful to you?
  2. What parts of the mission do you see relevant to your future job experience?
  3. What tools do you want to test out in the future?
  4. What did you contribute to your group?

The Socratic method is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions. Situated learning "takes as its focus the relationship between learning and the social situation in which it occurs".

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open-ended problem found in trigger material. The PBL process does not focus on problem solving with a defined solution, but it allows for the development of other desirable skills and attributes. This includes knowledge acquisition, enhanced group collaboration and communication.

Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which it is believed that students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems. Students learn about a subject by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, challenge, or problem. It is a style of active learning and inquiry-based learning. PBL contrasts with paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts or portrays a smooth path to knowledge by instead posing questions, problems, or scenarios.

Reading comprehension is the ability to process written text, understand its meaning, and to integrate with what the reader already knows. Comprehension specifically is a "creative, multifaceted process" dependent upon four language skills: phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a compulsory core subject of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It is marked on a letter scale (A-E) and aims to "provide an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know." Students who attain an E will not be able to receive their final IB Diploma.

Critical literacy is the ability to find embedded discrimination in media. This is done by analyzing the messages promoting prejudiced power relationships found naturally in media and written material that go unnoticed otherwise by reading beyond the author's words and examining the manner in which the author has conveyed his or her ideas about society's norms to determine whether these ideas contain racial or gender inequality.

Sheltered instruction is an approach to teaching English-language learners that integrates language and content instruction. The phrase "sheltered instruction", the original concept, and the underlying theory of comprehensible input are all credited to Stephen Krashen.

Editing technology is the use of technology tools in general content areas in education in order to allow students to apply computer and technology skills to learning and problem-solving. Generally speaking, the curriculum drives the use of technology and not vice versa. Technology integration is defined as the use of technology to enhance and support the educational environment. Technology integration in the classroom can also support classroom instruction by creating opportunities for students to complete assignments on the computer rather than with normal pencil and paper. In a larger sense, technology integration can also refer to the use of an integration platform and application programming interface (API) in the management of a school, to integrate disparate SaaS applications, databases, and programs used by an educational institution so that their data can be shared in real-time across all systems on campus, thus supporting students' education by improving data quality and access for faculty and staff.

"Curriculum integration with the use of technology involves the infusion of technology as a tool to enhance the learning in a content area or multidisciplinary setting... Effective integration of technology is achieved when students are able to select technology tools to help them obtain information in a timely manner, analyze and synthesize the information, and present it professionally to an authentic audience. The technology should become an integral part of how the classroom functions—as accessible as all other classroom tools. The focus in each lesson or unit is the curriculum outcome, not the technology."

A double-barreled question is an informal fallacy. It is committed when someone asks a question that touches upon more than one issue, yet allows only for one answer. This may result in inaccuracies in the attitudes being measured for the question, as the respondent can answer only one of the two questions, and cannot indicate which one is being answered.

Culturally relevant teaching or responsive teaching is a pedagogy grounded in teachers' practice of cultural competence, or skill at teaching in a cross-cultural or multicultural setting. Teachers using this method encourage each student to relate course content to their cultural context.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Facilitator</span> Person who helps a group understand common objectives & reach them

A facilitator is a person who helps a group of people to work together better, understand their common objectives, and plan how to achieve these objectives, during meetings or discussions. In doing so, the facilitator remains "neutral", meaning they do not take a particular position in the discussion. Some facilitator tools will try to assist the group in achieving a consensus on any disagreements that preexist or emerge in the meeting so that it has a solid basis for future action.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Literature circle</span> Structured book club for young people

A literature circle is equivalent for young people of an adult book club, but with greater structure, expectation and rigor. The aim is to encourage thoughtful discussion and a love of reading in young people. The intent of literature circles is "to allow students to practice and develop the skills and strategies of good readers".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Socratic questioning</span> Type of question to predict knowledge on topic

Socratic questioning was named after Socrates. He used an educational method that focused on discovering answers by asking questions from his students. According to Plato, who was one of his students, Socrates believed that "the disciplined practice of thoughtful questioning enables the scholar/student to examine ideas and be able to determine the validity of those ideas". Plato described this rigorous method of teaching to explain that the teacher assumes an ignorant mindset in order to compel the student to assume the highest level of knowledge. Thus, a student has the ability to acknowledge contradictions, recreate inaccurate or unfinished ideas and critically determine necessary thought.

Participatory culture, an opposing concept to consumer culture, is a culture in which private individuals do not act as consumers only, but also as contributors or producers (prosumers). The term is most often applied to the production or creation of some type of published media.

Feminist theory in composition studies is the application of feminist theory to composition studies. It considers the influence of gender, language, and cultural studies on composition in order to challenge preexisting conventions.

Social learning tools are tools used for pedagogical and andragogical purposes that utilize social software and/or social media in order to facilitate learning through interactions between individuals and systems. The idea of setting up "social learning tools" is to make education more convenient and widespread. It also allows an interaction between users and/or the software which can bring a different aspect to learning. People can acquire knowledge by distance learning tools, for instance, Facebook, Twitter, Khan Academy and so on. Social learning tools may mediate in formal or informal learning environments to help create connections between learners, instructors and information. These connections form dynamic knowledge networks. Social learning tools are used in schools for teaching/learning and in businesses for training. Within a school environment, the use of social learning tools can affect not only the user (student) but his/her caretaker as well as his/her instructor. It brings a different approach to the traditional way of learning which affects the student and his/her support circle. Companies also use social learning tools. They used them to improve knowledge transfer within departments and across teams. Businesses use a variety of these tools to create a social learning environment. They are also used in company settings to help improve team work, problem solving, and performance in stressful situations.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Thematic learning</span> Highlighting a theme for teaching purposes

Thematic teaching is the selecting and highlighting of a theme through an instructional unit or module, course, or multiple courses. It is often interdisciplinary, highlighting the relationship of knowledge across academic disciplines and everyday life. Themes can be topics or take the form of overarching questions. Thematic learning is closely related to interdisciplinary or integrated instruction, topic-, project- or phenomenon-based learning. Thematic teaching is commonly associated with elementary classrooms and middle schools using a team-based approach, but this pedagogy is equally relevant in secondary schools and with adult learners. A common application is that of second or foreign language teaching, where the approach is more commonly known as theme-based instruction. Thematic instruction assumes students learn best when they can associate new information holistically with across the entire curriculum and with their own lives, experiences, and communities.
