Ogbert the Nerd is an American emo band from New Brunswick, New Jersey. The band formed in 2018 and has released one album, I Don't Hate You in 2020, an EP, and a few singles.
Named after a joke from 30 Rock, the band members grew up in the New Jersey music scene, attending shows and playing in various bands, then formed Ogbert the Nerd in 2018. [1]
On February 24, 2019, the band put out their first release, an EP simply titled EP. Recorded between January and February of that year, it featured three songs that would later be re-recorded for the band's debut.
On Halloween 2020, the band released "Do It For Elio" and announced that their debut album would be released on December 11. [2] On November 27, the band released the second single for the album, "Snail". [3] I Don't Hate You, their debut, was released through Sun Eater Records. [1] [4] In an overall positive review, Stereogum's Chris DeVille called the album "extremely fun and shouty", as well as "raw, unhinged, [and] massively catchy". [5] IDIOTEQ referred to as "brilliantly contagious and emotionally raw". [6]
The following two years, NJ.com included the band on their lists of "N.J. Bands You Need To Hear". [7] [8]
In 2021, the band released I Don't Hate You: Bric-à-brac Edition, featuring instrumentals, demos, and live performances of songs from I Don't Hate You. [9]
In 2022, Ogbert the Nerd released the single A New Kind of Borkulator. [10] Stereogum's DeVille noted that the song "leads with a piercing vocal line that will be a litmus test for your tolerance of screechy, neurotic emo vocals." He concluded, "Those who vibe with that style will be treated to another chaotically catchy barnburner full of rad riffs and memorable lyrics". [10]
The following year, the band released the single Bike Cops. [11] Stereogum's DeVille wrote, "It’ll raise your pulse, test your lung capacity, and send tingles down your spine". IDIOTEQ called it "an adrenaline-fueled, emo-drenched spectacle, with intense lyrics". [6] The single was later issued as a limited edition 7" vinyl in 2024 on lead singer Madison James' Bored Science Ltd label.
In 2024, James attracted media attention for releasing three singles under the domain name "taylorswift.bandcamp.com". [12] [13] They, in the past, had also released music under "mychemicalromance", "daftpunk", and "nickiminaj" Bandcamp pages. On May 2, Bandcamp usurped the URLs for those pages. [14]
Screamo is an aggressive subgenre of emo that emerged in the early 1990s and emphasizes "willfully experimental dissonance and dynamics". San Diego-based bands Heroin and Antioch Arrow pioneered the genre in the early 1990s, and it was developed in the late 1990s mainly by bands from the East Coast of the United States such as Pg. 99, Orchid, Saetia, and I Hate Myself. Screamo is strongly influenced by hardcore punk and characterized by the use of screamed vocals. Lyrical themes usually include emotional pain, death, romance, and human rights. The term "screamo" has frequently been mistaken as referring to any music with screaming.
Andrew Robert Nielsen, known professionally as MC Lars, is an American record producer, rapper, cartoonist, podcaster and educator. Lars is one of the self-proclaimed originators of "lit-hop", and is the founder and CEO of the independent record label Horris Records. Lars has been cited as the creator of the term "iGeneration", which he was credited with doing in 2003.
Dallon James Weekes is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He was a member of Panic! at the Disco from 2009 to 2015, as a bassist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist; he continued performing with the band as a touring member until his departure in 2017. He was also the frontman of the power pop band and later solo musical project The Brobecks. Weekes currently performs as the frontman of I Dont Know How But They Found Me.
Empire! Empire! was an American emo band from Michigan. It was formed in 2006 originally as a solo project of band member Keith Latinen. The band's music is most often described as emotional indie rock reminiscent of '90s emo bands such as Mineral and American Football. The band's first release was in 2007 with an EP titled When The Sea Became A Giant. The band released a full-length album, What It Takes To Move Forward, in 2009. The band is signed to Count Your Lucky Stars Records and has released albums on a number of other labels, such as strictly no capital letters (UK), Topshelf Records, Stiff Slack (Japan), and Hobbledehoy Record Co (Australia). The band released their second album You Will Eventually Be Forgotten on August 19, 2014. On February 16, 2016, the band announced their final tour before their breakup on their official Facebook page.
The emo revival, or fourth wave emo, was an underground emo movement which began in the late 2000s and flourished until the mid-to-late 2010s. The movement began towards the end of the 2000s third-wave emo, with Pennsylvania-based groups such as Tigers Jaw, Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing eschewing that era's mainstream sensibilities in favor of influence from 1990s Midwest emo. Acts like Touché Amoré, La Dispute and Defeater drew from 1990s emo and especially its heavier counterparts, such as screamo and post-hardcore.
Pity Sex are an American alternative rock band from Ann Arbor, Michigan. The band formed in 2011, and released two studio albums – Feast of Love (2013) and White Hot Moon (2016) – prior to their split. The band combined elements of indie rock, shoegaze, dream pop and noise rock in their music, and were described by Pitchfork as "post-coital pop-punk". The band announced its reunion in 2022, as part of the Sound & Fury festival line-up.
Alexander Giannascoli, better known by his stage names Alex G or, formerly, (Sandy) Alex G, is an American musician, producer, and singer-songwriter. He started his career with DIY self-releases on Bandcamp and began building up an audience with his label debut, DSU (2014), released on Orchid Tapes to critical acclaim from various publications. He later signed with Lucky Number, who reissued his earlier releases, Rules and Trick (2012). In 2015, he signed with Domino Recording Company and released his sixth studio album, Beach Music. He followed it in 2017 with Rocket, which received further acclaim and recognition. Giannascoli's eighth studio album, House of Sugar, was released in 2019, and his ninth, God Save the Animals, in 2022.
Pinegrove is an American rock band formed in Montclair, New Jersey in 2010. The band's lineup is largely fluid and variable, with singer-songwriter Evan Stephens Hall and drummer Zach Levine representing its core members. The two met as children and played in various bands before founding Pinegrove. The band's musical style, which uses instruments such as the banjo and pedal steel guitar, is commonly described as a mix between alt-country and emo. Pinegrove's early years were spent self-releasing music – including their debut album, Meridian (2012) – and performing do-it-yourself (DIY) house shows.
Samuel Thompson Herring, also known as Hemlock Ernst, is an American singer, rapper and actor from Baltimore, Maryland. He is best known as the frontman of the synth-pop band Future Islands, with whom he has recorded seven studio albums. White Reaper is an American garage punk band based in Louisville, Kentucky. The band includes Tony Esposito (guitar/vocals), Ryan Hater, Hunter Thompson, Nick Wilkerson, and Sam Wilkerson. The band has released two EPs and four full-length albums, their first album in 2015 White Reaper Does It Again, and The World's Best American Band in 2017. White Reaper released their third studio album You Deserve Love on October 18, 2019, their major label debut. Their fourth studio album, Asking for a Ride, was released on January 27, 2023.
Midwest emo refers to the emo scene and/or subgenre that developed in the 1990s Midwestern United States. Employing unconventional vocal stylings, distinct guitar riffs and arpeggiated melodies, Midwest emo bands shifted away from the genre's hardcore punk roots and drew on indie rock and math rock approaches. According to the author and critic Andy Greenwald, "this was the period when emo earned many, if not all, of the stereotypes that have lasted to this day: boy-driven, glasses-wearing, overly sensitive, overly brainy, chiming-guitar-driven college music." Midwest emo is sometimes used interchangeably with second-wave emo. Although implied by the name, Midwest emo does not solely refer to bands and artists from the Midwestern United States, and the style is played by outfits across the United States and internationally.

It Looks Sad. is an American emo band from Charlotte, North Carolina. The band has released two EPs and a full length LP. Their first self-titled EP was released in 2014. In 2015, the band released two new songs, "Creature" and "Nagoya" both part of their 2015 EP, Kaiju.Sky Lake, the band's first studio album, was released in 2018. In March 2020, It Looks Sad. put out a four-track EP, Songs for Quarantine.
Infant Island is an American blackgaze screamo band formed in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 2016. The band consists of vocalist Daniel Kost, guitarists Alexander Rudenshiold and Winston Givler, bassist Kyle Guerra, and drummer Austin O'Rourke.

To See the Next Part of the Dream is the second studio album by South Korean musician Parannoul, released independently on 23 February 2021, and later that same year through Longinus Recordings and Poclanos. Parannoul, an anonymous artist of whom little information is known, recorded the album over several years in his bedroom using very limited equipment. To See the Next Part of the Dream has been variously characterized as a shoegaze, lo-fi, emo, and indie rock record. All instruments are virtual and the volume of most songs usually reach clipping levels. The lyrics relate Parannoul's depression and struggles, and the record contains references to 2000s culture, specially Japanese media. Following its release, the album gained popularity on the Internet and garnered a cult following. To See the Next Part of the Dream was critically acclaimed and it's considered to be one of the best albums of 2021.
