Patricia Field (born February 12, 1942) [1] is an American costume designer, stylist, and fashion designer working in New York City. [2]
Field was born in New York City to an Armenian father and a Greek mother, who emigrated from Plomari, Lesbos. [1] [3] She was raised in Queens, where her family owned a drycleaning store; her father died when she was 8 years old. She studied government and philosophy at New York University. [4]
With her then-partner Jo-Ann Salvucci, Field opened her first boutique, Pants Pub, in 1966 on Washington Square in Greenwich Village. [4] The shop, later renamed to the eponymous Patricia Field, moved in 1971 to 8th Street, then to West Broadway, and finally to 306 Bowery in NoHo, [5] where Field owned the property. She sold it in 2016 to concentrate on costume designing for television and film. [4] In 2018 she opened the ARTFashion Gallery on the Lower East Side, which sells art and hand-painted original clothing and accessories by a selected group of artists. [6]
Field is credited with originating the fashion for leggings in the 1970s. [5] [7] Her stores were popular with the transgender [4] and underground communities; [8] she became known for what she calls "freaky fashion". [9]
Her design influences include John Galliano, Diane von Furstenberg, and Thierry Mugler. [10] She was a mentor for fashion designer Hushidar Mortezaie. [11] [12]
Field was the costume designer for the 1987 film Lady Beware and the TV series Crime Story . After she met Sarah Jessica Parker during the filming of 1995's Miami Rhapsody , they became friends and Field was engaged to design the costumes for the TV series Sex and the City . [4] The show became well known for its fashions, [7] [13] particularly for their individuality and unexpectedness. [9] For her work on Sex and the City, Field was nominated for five Emmy Awards, with one win, and nominated for six Costume Designers Guild awards, with four wins. She is one out of six honorees of the 2008 Real Time Film Festival.[ citation needed ] She returned as costume designer for the 2008 movie Sex and the City and its 2010 sequel Sex and the City 2 , but did not work on the 2021–2022 series reboot, And Just Like That… . After the successes of the Sex in the City costumes, Field was in high demand for new projects in television and film. [4] Her other television credits include Hope & Faith , Kath & Kim , [15] [16] Ugly Betty , [9] [17] [16] Younger on TV Land, [18] season 11 of Murphy Brown , [19] and Emily in Paris . [9] [2] [14] In 2011, she designed most of the outfits for the characters in a Taiwan television drama called Material Queen .[ citation needed ]
In film, her credits include The Devil Wears Prada , [9] for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, and Second Act (2018). [20] In the Asian market, she created the fashion behind the 2010 Chinese feature film Go Lala Go! (Chinese :杜拉拉升职记). [21]
She designed the outfits in Namie Amuro's music videos [22] for her three songs "New Look", "Rock Steady", and "What A Feeling" from her single 60s 70s 80s; as well as Anna Vissi's music videos [23] for "Stin Pyra" and "Alitissa Psihi" from her album Apagorevmeno .
A documentary film on her career called Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field, directed by Michael Selditch, had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in 2023. [24] [25]

Field appeared as the first guest judge during the first season of the Bravo reality television series Project Runway . Her boutique was featured in a 2007 episode of Kathy Griffin's reality show My Life on the D-List and in a 2008 episode of Paris Hilton's My New BFF .
In February 2023, she published a memoir, Pat in the City: My Life of Fashion, Style, and Breaking All the Rules. [8] [9]
Field is a lesbian, [26] and was in a long-term relationship with costume designer Rebecca Weinberg (Field), [8] [27] with whom she partnered on Sex and the City. [7]
Field defended Dior head designer John Galliano after he was arrested in February 2011 over an alleged anti-semitic assault in a Paris bar, [28] describing Galliano's videotaped behavior in a phone interview with WWD as "farce" and "theater". [29]

André Leon Talley was an American fashion journalist, stylist, creative director, and editor-at-large of Vogue magazine. He was the magazine's fashion news director from 1983 to 1987, its first African-American male creative director from 1988 to 1995, and then its editor-at-large from 1998 to 2013. Often regarded as a fashion icon, he was known for supporting emerging designers and advocating for diversity in the fashion industry; while the capes, kaftans, and robes he wore became his trademark look. Maison Margiela, formerly Maison Martin Margiela, is a French luxury fashion house founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens in 1988 and headquartered in Paris. The house produces both haute couture-inspired artisanal collections and ready-to-wear collections, with the former influencing the designs of the latter. Product lines include womenswear, menswear, jewellery, footwear, accessories, leather goods, perfumes and household goods. Known for deconstructive and avant-garde designs with unconventional materials, Maison Margiela has traditionally held live shows in unusual settings, for example empty metro stations and street corners. Models' faces are often obscured by fabric or long hair to direct attention to the clothes and design. Margiela resigned as creative designer in 2009 and John Galliano was appointed to the role in 2014.
Phillip Bloch is an American celebrity stylist, designer, and television personality. He has styled historic cover photos including River Phoenix, which would be Phoenix's last photo shoot and the photo would be used on the cover of several magazines, and Michael Jackson for Ebony and Jet magazine. Bloch also styled the very first issue of VIBE magazine, and was featured in the film Return to Babylon and co-starred on the VH1 reality series Glam God with Vivica A. Fox.

She was known for her unexpected mix of fabrics, often incorporating knitted cashmere, silk chiffon, silk satin, lace, tulle, and leather. A Heidi Weisel chiffon and lace design is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Weisel was a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
Robert Fairer is a British fashion photographer who is known for his backstage photography in the 1990s until the 2010s. Working for American Vogue, Elle and Harper's Bazaar, his behind-the-scenes shots of supermodels, fashion designers, makeup artists, hair stylists and accessories designers would come to define the magazines 'front of the book'. His first solo exhibition 'Robert Fairer Backstage Pass: Dior, Galliano, Jacobs, and McQueen' was held at SCAD Fash Museum of Fashion. His work is included in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria and has been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, The Design Museum, Musée national des beaux‑arts du Québec, LACMA, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the National Gallery of Victoria.
Irere was the twenty-first collection by British fashion designer Alexander McQueen for his eponymous fashion house. Irere was inspired by imagery from the Age of Discovery and from the people and animals of the Amazon rainforest. Its title is claimed to mean 'transformation' in an unspecified Indigenous Amazonian language. The collection comprised three distinct concepts presented as a narrative sequence: shipwrecked pirates, menacing conquistadors, and tropical birds. McQueen described the collection as an effort to present a more mature point of view and surprise viewers with bold colours.
